Interesting article but the most interesting part is near the end. "Individually, the big moves all have merit, at least from a football standpoint. But, collectively, it might have been too much change. And that's only the short-term outlook. A year from now, and perhaps sooner in some cases, the Jets will face a massive -- repeat, massive -- challenge. Several key players will be up for big contracts, namely Ferguson, Cromartie, Holmes, Darrelle Revis, Nick Mangold, Braylon Edwards and David Harris. Cap or no cap, there's simply no way to keep them all. Tannenbaum planned for the future by drafting cornerback Kyle Wilson in the first round -- he'll be a good one -- but there will be major upheaval in a year. Right now, the Jets are all-in for 2010." And isn't that what we all knew anyway. It's now or never and the team will probably never look the same when this year is over. http://sports.espn.go.com/new-york/nfl/columns/story?id=5133084
I still don't think is now or never... ...I do think that "now" is a great chance, but if it doesn't work I don't think it's "never", the core of the team will remain and there'll be more chances to build another "now or never" season (like this one) --> specially with Tanny and Rex running the show
Yeah, that's why it's been impossible for Indy to keep Peyton Manning, Reggie Wayne, Dallas Clark, Jeff Saturday, Dwight Freeney, and Robert Mathis, right? We'll lock up, at the very least, Mangold, Brick, Revis, Harris, and one of Holmes or Braylon. We may well lose Cromartie, but to suggest total roster overhaul is a wee bit strong.
Tannenbaum knows exactly what he's doing and what needs to be done. That is why Leon and Faneca were dumped now and their low-cost replacements were already brought in. Going into 2011, I expect either Edwards or Holmes to be gone and we will probably draft a receiver next year to replace them. Ellis and his big salary will be gone. Ditto for Bryan Thomas. Their replacements will be drafted or brought in on the cheap. Gholston will be gone if he doesnt show drastic improvement. Damien Woody could be gone if they think Ducasse can play tackle. Those are a few big money players that are not core players and can all be replaced. Cromartie will depend largely on how well he performs this season. I fully expect Brick, Mangold, Harris, Revis, and either Holmes or Edwards to all be re-signed and be here for the future. We are in good hands with Tannenbaum.
We are now in the position that if players want to win a ring they will take a pay cut to stay with us... of those guys edwards, cro, and holmes arent core players... and with all of their off field issues I think we have the upper hand in negotiations, thats if they want to win.
Those quotes seem a little misguided--I feel like the general understanding or feeling was that Holmes and Edwards are basically battling this year to see who's going to be the long term Jets WR and that the next "least esstential commit" after that would be Cromartie if we can't hold on to all. Ferguson, Revis, Mangold, and Harris are the locks
If they can keep Brick, Mangold, Harris, Revis I'll be happy. Then you can make a decision on Cromartie, Holmes, and Braylon.
In order of importance IMO- Revis, Brick, Mangold, Edwards or Holmes, Harris, Cromartie. Cromartie seems like the odd man out at this point, but I think the Jets plan on keeping him if he has a good season. You can't keep giving away 2nd round picks for one year players. It will be very interesting, but I'm not going to worry about it until after the season.
Revis, Brick, Mangold and Harris take priority and I wouldn't be suprised if they get new deals sooner rather than later. Edwards/Holmes are basically competing with each other for a long term deal, with the winner being our #1 wideout for the future. The other will likely be franchised and traded. Cromartie is a wildcard at this point, but we can let him walk if he sucks or we can't afford him now that Kyle Wilson is in the fold.
I think of those, Cromartie and Braylon will prove most expendable, but who knows how things will shape up...
X2, it would be sick if we could lock up Cromartie. I think Holmes will be solid this year and Edwards is going.
This thread underscores the fact that Faneca and Leon had to go. The were good players for us but not part of our core. Braylon and Holmes are probably fighting for one spot. If Cromartie loses the # 2 CB job to Wilson, we may be able to lock him up long term as our nickel CB. If Cromartie plays lights out we probably can't afford him long term.
Stay after 2010: Mangold Holmes Harris Leave: Cro Edwards Woody(Cut) Gholston(Cut) T-Rich(Retire) Ellis(Hopefully retires) Thomas(Cut) Taylor(cut/retire)
We have to retain Darrelle Revis, Nick Mangold, and David Harris. Ferguson is also near the top of the pecking order because he's nearing that elite level of blindside protectors and elite LTs are hard to come by. Cromartie is near the bottom because we drafted Wilson (sucks that we've already spent at least a 3rd on him). Holmes and Edwards are fighting for an extension and we should keep one of them because we don't want to be without a #1 receiver on the roster. We should franchise and trade Holmes or Cromartie to recoup a draft pick.
Revis and Brick are under contract for 2011 so I don't see Tannenbaum putting too much priority on them right away. They definitely need to be resigned eventually but I'm willing to bet that Revis and Brick can be talked into giving Tannenbaum some time get the players set to expire before them signed and under the cap(that might not be there) so he can work out the best contracts for them a year or two later. As for Cromartie and Edwards, if one or both of them goes on to have a great season, I think one of the two is going to get the tag-and-trade treatment.
IMO Cromartie and Edwards are gone after this year. Not sure the jets would have added Cromartie THIS year if they knew they would get CBs thru draft/undrafted FAs. Bryan Thomas is WAY overdue to be cut--the guy gives us 0 pass rush off the edge. Really like the Holmes pickup even though he is out 4 games--A super bowl MVP for a 5th round pick.
I don't think it is that much of a problem...whats stopping us from getting more players in the same fashion that will be cheaper for the short term? It's a cycle.
We'll see who's better this season between Edwards and Holmes. Personally, I'm pulling for Edwards because he's our only legitimate red zone target but it should be a good competition between Michigan and Ohio State alums.
Typical BSPN. What good is it, were it not for the bullshits? They don't even research their stuff enough before posting bullshit, which is why BSPN sucks so royally these days. 1. Jets have been dangling Bryan Thomas and Shaun Ellis. Take them out, and take out Jason Taylor, and you have cleared 10M off the bat. 2. Faneca is gone - he will save about 1.2M this year, but he was scheduled to make 7.5 next year, meaning his cutting nets another 7.5M in saving 3. Damien Woody won't be resigned. That's another fat 5M. If you add all that up, you got more than 20M in cap space - that is, if the next year's cap space does not increase at all (which is highly unlikely.) As of now, Jets are at some 116M I think. After cap purging, Jets should be close to 98M or so - very healthy cap-wise. 4. Another thing that BSPN moron is forgetting is that, MANGOLD AND FERGUSON ARE NOT PLAYING OUT OF THEIR ROOKIE CONTRACT. Mangold is playing for 4.5M while Ferguson's cap figure is about 7.2M. There will be an increase in salary, but not at an astronomical jump, as those BSPN joke suggests. Gee. If I could post up bullshit all day and pick up the paycheck, I'd do that in a heartbeat...
