so obviously the jets are thin at WR and although some have confidence in our corps others do not. i havent decided which i have fallen under yet but logic tells the sensical football fan that of the two possible wrs on the team (stuckey and clowney) one will work out and the other wont. Even if that does happen we are still a thin unit. now marrivan harrison has yet to sign any sort of deal and although teams have given him looks he has yet to make any significant signs. most likely bc he is still demanding way too much money: but as we near camp he may get a bit more desperate. Assuming the price goes down and this would be a must cuz we are not overpaying for an over the hill harrison, it seems as if he would be a good fit with the jets for the right price and a one year deal. he will mentor the younger guys. be a stable contributer albeit not a great: and would also take pressure off cotchery. with that being said, would u want him? even if it would be a one year stop gap. i for one would be thrilled to have him for a year but at the right price. thoughts? ohh and i do realize the chances of this happening is slim but certainly not impossible. we have been mentioned to look at him earlier this offseason and tannebaum prides himself in looking under every stone. Dont forget that around this time last year we made a major move to get brett favre right before the opening of camp.
I've said this since he was released. We aren't going to stretch the field this year. We need a possession WR.
"sensical"? I don't think this team needs one-year band aid-type players. I don't want any more over-the-hill veterans. Let's develop some young talent.
I thought u had something new to add. Nevermind, same old stuff thats been going on since his release...
Bringing in a veteran doesn't necessarily mean you can't give younger players a chance. Right now we have one proven WR and one showing promise, and that's it. A vet would come cheap and give us a reliable starter or depth for when Clowney proves himself the likeness of his name we have something to fall back on.
I would be happy if we got him because whoever is starting at QB it will be the first time in the NFL (or almost the first time) and a veteran WR could really take some pressure off. Not to mention we have Cotchery who will be a 1'st time #1 reciever and a bunch of young guys, so they all could benefit from having in the locker-room a guy who WAS actually a #1 reciever and with veteran experience to (hopefully) share. Cotchery, Harrison (or Toomer, I wouldn't rule him out), Stuckey, Clowney, Smith and Wright and we are ok for this year... Main questions are: 1 Can Cotchery be a #1 reciever? 2 Can B. Smith live up to his physical tools and be a serviceable WR? 3 Can Stuckey be a viable #2? 4 Are Clowney and Wright capable of playing WR at the NFL level? We sort these questions this year so next offseason we sort the position out once and for all (hopefully).
PS What many people confuse is "giving a guy a chance" with "throwing him to the wolves" If a guy showed in practice he has potential and is ready for the real game that's giving him a chance. If a guy has physical tools but hasn't mastered NFL speed (and if you are a good coach you see that in training) or his mindset isn't right (and with both of these things a veteran can be VERY helpful) then you are just throwing him to the wolves. I hope Rex Ryan understands this and doesn't ruin the young players we have (Especially Sanchez). We'll see...
we've been down this road before art monk a prime example others that come to mind justin mccareins and mathew hatchette. id rather someone younger and taller.
Was Justin McCareins a proved veteran with age concern when we got him? Don't remember it that way...
I don't want Harrison. He's way past his prime and his injuries are piling up, and there are some character issues with him that a lot of people either don't know about or don't want to admit. But. To compare him to Hatchette and McCareins. That is not doing the needful.
I thought this was beaten to death back in April........ Maybe next week...we can talk about trading for Ocho Cinco again....or maybe Boldin....I can't remember where we are in the "rotation".
Thats exactly my thoughts on it. He has slipped badly in the past year and is not exactly the nurturing type who will mentor our young receivers. By all accounts Harrison is aloof and distant from his teamates, not somthing I want to bring into our locker room with an unproven QB taking over the offense. I'd pass on him.
He has not had a good season since 2006 and has not been a #1 or #2 (I really hate those terms) in Indy in either 2007 or 2008. What makes anybody in their right mind think a 37 year old receiver can be any use to any team, let alone the Jets?????
Steve,, Austin Texas 12:59 PM ET Do you see Marvin Harrison playing anywhere in 2009? Jason La Canfora, NFL Network I got about 10 of these questions so wanted to answer this before our time was up. I have chatted with some execs from teams that are keeping a close eye on WRs, and i can't find anyone too high on himn right now. The injuries are a big concern and I had a few execcs say they think he's done. I've heard guys like Horn and Toomer are higher on team's emergency lists. Now, there are 32 teams out there and injuries will occur and I hope he gets a shot (he was at Syracuse when I was, and man, what a joy to watch him and Shelby Hill and Quadry Ishmail on the field at the same time), but it might take a while.
