not too start another leinart thread but i am sitting here listening to beningo interview leinart on the phone........ nice peice - he sounds like a decent guy - told of a prior connection with schottenheimer being the receivers coach at USC when leinart was recruited. said the intervied went real well and he appeared to hit it off with the jets. flat out said he would love to play in NY - but beningo did not press the issue too much. i really wanted him to say something about the new regime and being part of a re-building org - and of course playing in front of the most intense fans in the league. talked a little about USC and a couple big games. the last comment - "i want to be called as quick as possible" IMO - i still favor cutler over leinart - there is something about cutler - his delivery and release that makes me think he can be a very good QB. At #4 though - the value is NOT there with cutler - but in a funny way it appears to be there with leinart. my bottom line - if mario williams is there - he is my pick. if not and leinart is there i look to trade out and down to 6-10 and target cutler/davis. if i cannot get a trade - i would probably take leinart - though vernon davis at 4 is not a terrible choice. jil
It would be very hard to pass up on Leinart if he falls to 4 as it is rumored he will. Although the talk is now he will fall out of the top 10, which is just ridiculous.
Bob Glauber's mock in Newsday has Leinart going to #17. I decided to put the paper back and save my fifty cents. Like many Jets fans ,I'd like Leinart or Mario with the 4 pick(slight preference to Leinart). BTW, D'Brick is up next with Benigno.
My top 4 are in my sig. I won't be upset if we take Mario or Brick, I just hope we don't pass on Leinart. As odd as it sounds, I hope Tennessee takes Leinart, so we don't have to worry about the consequences of passing him.
If it comes down to a decision between Mario & Leinart, we have to take Leinart.. The only way Mario & DBrick enter the equation is if Leinart goes off the board before 4.. I'm not crazy about Mario, the potential is there to become a dominant DE but he is by no means a sure thing and quite honestly his motor and consistency in college scare me..
Three reasons why not to take Leinart 1)Beningo loves him which is ultimate kiss of death 2)Lupica wants the Jets to take him 3)Myers wants the Jets to take him Enough said............
In my opinion, he's the only guy who can be considered a top ten prospect at the position. In the case of Cutler, it takes a little bit more than looking like a quarterback and throwing really hard to impress me. The guy hasn't done squat, and I see a lot of forcing balls into tight spots and a lot of other poor decisions. If we're interested in a tough guy with an arm, I'd rather take Croyle, whose value in the second round is more reasonable. It is massively impractical for us to pick a QB at 4. -X-
yeah all people who have seen them pass on a franchise QB once before..and how that worked out for the franchise..
I'd love to know the meaning behind this. Please explain to me how it would be massively impractical to draft a QB at 4 given our QB situation right now..
Beningo changes his opinions more times than the wind changes direction in one day.One day he loves Chad Pennington and is ripping the Jets for not giving him the $$$ and when Chad rips his shoulder into shreds,Joe rips the Jets for giving him that contract.Come on.... Lupica?I hate that guy Myers?Same as Lupica
Because we're not expected to contend this year. Because if we didn't at least want to TRY Pennington out, we would have cut him. A guy on the bench might as well be dead money. Because we have Ramsey on a one year audition. Because if these guys flop, we will be in the same position next year. Because it is absurd to commit that much money to the quarterback position. -X-
I don't think Penny is coming back, but imagine if he does and we just used the 4th pick on a QB. That is the drawback to taking a QB so high. I want Leinart, and I have no faith in Pennington(would liek to see him come back though). It sure coudl bite us in the ass if we use that pick on a QB though.
I have put some thought into it and most franchises are based around their QB. A new regime has come in and what better way to start their tenure than to pick the guy they think can lead them to the promised land during their stay here at NY.
What are the guarantees with Leinart? The guy suffered a similar injury to Pennington's in high school and had his shoulder scoped. Look, we're paying for Pennington, so it's worth it to give the guy a shot. If he does well, the investment isn't as bad, and the need is eliminated. If he flops, the whole team flops, and we're in a position to get Quinn or Stanton next year AND we've filled a hole at four this year. -X-
Because we're not expected to contend this year. exactly, wouldn't that be the time to groom a rookie Qb so when you are ready to contend he is ready? Because if we didn't at least want to TRY Pennington out, we would have cut him. A guy on the bench might as well be dead money. It would be very irresponsible to pass on a franchise QB to wait for Penny to get healthy again. They have to believe that his days as a starter are over, if they are not it will be a pleasant surprise.. Because we have Ramsey on a one year audition. Ramsey is an insurance policy, nothing more, nothing less.. Because if these guys flop, we will be in the same position next year. maybe yes, maybe no but you don't go into one draft thinking well if we flop we can just get that position filled next year. I sure as hell hope our FO isn't expecting to be in this position again next year.. Because it is absurd to commit that much money to the quarterback position. Its unfortunate that it came to this with Penny but it did and now they have to deal with it. If he doesn't get released he will be cut next year. It would be a bigger mistake to get cheap with the QB position because of it.. When a team has a QB situation like the Jets it would be absurd to pass on a franchise QB when given the chance.
Question - Do 2 Arm procedures and an average arm already scare you? Does me... I read where Mangini / Bellichik never feared Pennington cuz they basically cut the field off and had him contained... I can't see Mangini setting himself up this way and from what I hear arm strength in the Meadowlands is a big concern for Mangini.... I'll take Mario thank you.
yesterday you said his motor wasn't a concern but, it was taking plays off.... I told you it was said that the way Mario was coached made it look at times to the untrained or uninformed eye that he was taking plays off, when in reality he was told to stand his ground and let the play come to him... You can't watch him and watch a Manny Lawson or a pass Rusher and compare their games the same way... You have to understand what their role is and Mario has a lot more responsibilities than your average pass rushing DE/OLB hybrid player.... If they told Mario to go full bore and 100% rush the pass rusher every time, I guess you would go nuts over him.... Me? I like the fact that he's an ALL AROUND Defensive Stud and a player you build a defense around!!!!
You will be getting a guy with inconsistent production on gamedays and a guy with an inconsistent motor than.. Thats a joke comparing Leinarts arm to Pennys.. And if I remember correctly Pennington fared pretty well in the Meadowlands wind before the injuries. Has Brady had any troubles with the wind?
