@JennyVrentas: OK wait, check that: O'Dowd signed w/Jets. First true freshman to start at center for USC. Snapped for Sanchez. #nyj
He actually signed with the team, he was Sanchez's former center. Probably a practice squad player if kept.
At least its better than Sanchez liking his balls in Scotty McKnight’s hands... Maybe this means that we dont draft a guy solely based on Sanchez in the 7th round? Eh, maybe thats too hopeful.
If we bring in more of sanchez's buddies we can turn the locker room back to sanchez's side...genius tanny!!
If he can stay healthy he might be a cheaper vackup then Robert Turner. He is a very smart center and very capable of making line calls. he was noted for movement skills but has shown capable of blocking bigger, stronger defensive players.
I remember, prior to last year draft, he fell from possible 3rd rounder to UDFA. He sucked badly in one on one drills... that said I'm happy he's brought in as I think he has some talent and he has a good relationship with Sanchez. You can never go wrong with these signings... at worst he doesn't make the team and big deal.
Could he be being brought in to back up B. Moore, with an eye towards filling the opening..Moore is not really a pulling guard, a former center with movement skills could be You'd then have (eventually) DBrick (on the tail end) Slauson (young),Mangold (Prime), O'Dowd, Vlad (both Young)
Some people were never totally sold on Brick, although he came into his own in the 2010 season. He may not be on the tail end of his career as far as reaching a ceiling, but he still has a lot to prove in the running game.
Somebody wake up Tannenbaum and tell him the free agency period has begun. Bringing back Thomas made no sense the guy has stunk since his contract year and before that he stunk since he was drafted. Then he signs an UDFA who's only claim is being Sanchez center in college. If we draft/sign enough of Sanchez friends maybe he will feel loved and not coddled.
O'Dowd struggled and was manhandled. He almost looked like he lost strenght and can't hold the point of attack. He will probably be training camp fodder, so I wouldn't get too worked up on this signing.
Not every FA signing is going to be a block buster deal. With limited cap room expect a lot of these moves as every team makes them.
I think you're right on. Many here on TGG are fed up with Tanny going for broke with huge signing like Brett Favre and Tone at the expense of the rest of the team but here they are screaming for Tanny to make a splash and get Mario Williams. Some ppl never learn.
The Jets don't have enough cap space available to run with the big dogs early in free agency. If they made a splashy signing right now it would be to overpay for somebody who was not all that good at the price. My guess is the Jets will let free agency play itself out over the next week and then go bargain hunting among the people who didn't have the market they thought they would. That's a whole lot better than overpaying for one or two of those guys now before they have established that they have no real market. Winston would cost the Jets 6+ million a year right now and maybe more than that. He'll cost them 4 million a year in two weeks and 3 million a year in June if he's still out there.
I'm with this sentiment. Moreover, isn't he like 23 this year? His body can still grow - meaning, with proper coaching and exercise regimen, he can become stronger. Looks like he has the frame and body mass to play OL in the NFL. His kneecap injury in 2009 scares me somewhat, but if at all, being 3rd best center prospect out of the entire draft (at one point, but still) has to mean something in terms of talent. If he doesn't pan out, then he is, as many have guessed already, a camp fodder. If he pans out - which is a possibility - then what's not to like?
