I did not see this anywhere else and I thought it was interesting...

A breakdown of newly acquire Kris Jenkins' contract, obtained by the New York Daily News, shows he's eligible for an annual workout bonus of $500,000 and a yearly weight bonus of $250,000 ? staggering incentives even by NFL standards.

Jenkins, obtained by the New York Jets from the Carolina Panthers, who weighed more than 390 pounds at the end of last season, is subject to an official weigh-in 10 times each season and will receive $25,000 each time he meets his prescribed weight.

To receive the workout bonus, he must participate in a predetermined number of offseason workouts with the team. His contract includes $9.5 million in guarantees, not $20 million, as had been widely report

Chance to possibly make a quarter million in bonus's, and all he has to do is lose weight?

If that doesnt motivate him, nothing will.

    These are smart incentives.

These are incentives that are going to keep Kris Jenkins healthy.

I wonder if we worked out something like this with Damien Woody?

And if we're going this route, can we add an incentive clause to D'Brickashaw Ferguson's contract? Brick, for every pound you gain, we'll give you five thousand dollars.

This is a pretty smart move by the FO. I don't know how common this type of clause is, or if it's even ever done, but it's a good way to do it. Rather than penalizing the guy if he fails to make weight you give him loot every time he does. This way he can't get mad with the team if he isn't getting his bonuses.

This guy needs to be in shape or he won't get through training camp that easily.

I am suprised by the guaranteed figure of $9.5mm versus $20mm widely reported by the media. Sounds like his agent was puffing up the numbers to make himself look good.

    From the NY Daily News

    Details of Jenkins' Jets contract
The Daily News has obtained a breakdown of Kris Jenkins’ new contract with the Jets. Let’s just say it’s dramatically different than the five-year, $35 million deal (including $20 million guaranteed) that is being reported, courtesy of his agent.

The highlights of the ACTUAL contract:

    • It’s five years, $30.25 million.

    • He’s due to make $18 million over the first three years, the best gauge of actual value.

    • Only $9.5 million is guaranteed, which is his total 2008 compensation ($4.5 million signing bonus, $750,000 base salary, $3.5 million roster bonus and $750,000 in workout/weight bonuses).

    • His 2008 cap number is $5.9 million.

    • In each year, there is a $500,000 workout bonus and a $250,000 weight clause. He will be weighed 10 times per season and he receives $25,000 if he makes his prescribed weight.

Clearly, the Jets are concerned about Jenkins’ weight and conditioning, issues that dogged him in recent years with the Panthers. He was listed in the Panthers’ 2007 media guide at 349 pounds, but as reported today by the Daily News, he weighed more than 390 pounds at the end of the season.

Analysis: This isn’t a bad deal for the Jets. Conceivably, they could cut Jenkins after one year and take a $3.6 million cap hit in 2009 while realizing a $2.8 million savings. Obviously, they’re not likely to cut him after one year, considering they gave up third- and fifth-round picks for him.

This contract makes a whole lot more sense than the crazy numbers that have been flying around.

    390 lbs? Wow.

That means they could set like a 360 target for him to play NT. Hmmm. It'll certainly put to rest the "where's the beef?" question.

Woody was in the same weight class at the start of last season, and got down to around 350 when he was moved to RT.

He also had a severe foot injury in 06 that caused him to blow up.

The 360 number for Jenkins is probably legit
