Kerry Rhodes tweets about leaving New York

Posted by Michael David Smith on December 11, 2009 6:23 PM ET
Still upset about being taken out of the starting lineup, New York Jets safety Kerry Rhodes went on Twitter today to say he thinks he'd be appreciated elsewhere.

Responding to a tweet from a Jets fan who asked him if he realized how lucky he was to be playing football in New York, Rhodes tweeted the following (edited for clarity):

"New York is an OK place to play! Very good place to live and do other things, but to play is OK. I love real fans like you, trust me. The only reason I would leave is to show the few that hate what I will do with another team and let them know that having me isn't that bad! I promise a lot of teams would love to have me as their problem!"

Rhodes and Jets coach Rex Ryan are clearly not on the same page about Rhodes' role in the defense, and Rhodes yelled at a Jets assistant during Thursday's practice. For as much as Rhodes seems to think he deserves to be a starter for the Jets, at this point it's hard to see why Ryan would want him on the team at all. Which means that in a few months, Rhodes can find out exactly how much he'd be appreciated elsewhere.

TGG did this to him. TGG created Revis Christ(well I did). TGG is everywhere.

We will one day own the team.

If you can find a team that makes bad trades and get a 3rd rounder out of him. Awesome.

It's amazing. People want him to get off twitter but still somehow give him an audience. Can't have it both ways!

If he keeps running his yap, we won't get shit for him in a trade. But he's got to go, that's insubordination. Its a damn shame too, he had so much potential, and now he's the DB version of Freddie Mitchell.

    ironic isnt it :)

these are the same people who were calling him an all pro 2 years ago and said he only has an upside. now they hate him. and people wonder why players dont have any loyalty to a franchise.

The Kerry Rhodes Law of Diminishing Returns:

    1) Value at the beginning of the season: low 2nd rounder

    2) Value after he shoots his trash-talking mouth off, registers 5,000 tweets and gets into a shoving match at the Miami bench, but before he loses starting position: high 2nd rounder

    3) Value after he loses starting position for not playing physically: mid 3rd rounder

    4) Value after he loses it, screams at our LB coach and takes his displeasure to the tweets, airwaves and any asshole who'll listen: low 4th rounder

    5) Value after he eventually calls Rex Ryan a "lying scumbag" in one of his tweets and demands to be traded, taking it to the press and disrupting the shit out of the locker room before the final game of the season: 5th rounder and a swift kick in the ass.

when teams consider how much better Rex made this defense and the fact that he doesn't want him, they won't be knocking each other over for Rhodes that's for sure. if the guy wasn't playing his way out of a big contract, he is sure talking himself out of one.

I can't recall a player who has gone to such an extreme to tell people he wants out and football doesn't mean what it used to like Rhodes has.

Its warranted. The whole league knows this dude can play, but now the sport that gave him the opportunity to do those "other things" he likes doing so much. What a waste of talent.

After those two INTs last week, all he had to do was STFU and let those two INTs do his talking... then go out this week and try to do the same thing.

    But oh no....

Ricky Williams, IMO, topped Rhodes by far. It amazed me how a guy can go that far out of his way to fuck up. But it also shows us that it IS possible to come back after that kind of thing. Ricky is the exception though, but a long shot. Most guys that shoot themselves in the foot that bad wind up an assistant high school football coach/driver ed teacher.

Well said Section 227, this is representative of his deeper issues. He needs a reality check and I mean that in the nicest way possible. I'm pretty sure he thinks he 'arrived' and the effort/hustle he once played with is no longer needed in his mind.

I think it's safe to say that his denial has been ongoing for the better part of a year or more. His ego ran away from him and all sense of reality went out the window, along with the work ethic and all the hard things it takes to stay on top, like concentration, study, and getting the fuck off of time-wasting shit like Twitter.

He considered himself the one shining star of the DBs (And he certainly was), and then that little snot-nosed rookie bitch Revis came along and now he's getting all the limelight. Imagine that?

Well, I'm still the star and I'll prove it by stepping up the bravado and trash talk and show everybody I'm still the badass around here. Trouble is, everybody eventually saw through it, including Ryan, who finally had enough.

Rhodes is still in denial even up to the very moment, you can just read it between the lines of all those fucked up Tweets he still insists on sending out. What an egocentric asshole.

    hmmmm, good point.

Did Ricky have this kind of slow downfall or did he just abruptly leave? I can't remember.

Rumor had it he took off to go live in a cave in Southern Californication. I never saw anyone try to intentionally crash and burn as bad as that guy.

He came to his senses when his lawyers finally found him living in a commune somewhere and told him he has to return the $8 Million he was paid up front to play. Of course, the money was gone, so that kind of got him off the weed, at least for time being. The man is truly a nutcase.
