Was just on Rotoworld and read an interesting tidbit. Jeremy Kerley's 2015 salary of $2 million becomes fully guaranteed on March 14. It gives the Jets some time to make a call on one of the most-basic receivers in the league, whom ex-GM John Idzik deemed worthy of a four-year, $16 million extension in October. The Jets wouldn't clear much cap room ($200K) by releasing Kerley, but would save the $2M in straight cash. Clearing Kerley's money off the books could justify keeping Percy Harvin at his inflated $10.5 million salary. Source: ESPN New York Feb 11 - 10:47 AM I wonder future cap ramifications from this. I think it proves the point Kerley is a minimal impact guy who we shouldn't act like is an important piece going forward.
If Harvin, Decker and Kerley became Harvin, Decker and Torrey Smith or some other free agent WR I think it would be a good move. This team needs to be adding offensive weapons, not cutting them.
pointless, his cap hit doesn't get in the way of anything and stands to be more than fair given his past production. 2.6 mil cap hit for a vet WR, 3.1 mil next year. he's perfect for rounding out a cast of any WR's(so long as he isn't the best on the field) and keeps us from attaining… oh yeah, NOBODY. he had an off year but his value is spectacular, why cut him for the sake of it?
Not sure on the financials, but Kerley did no have a good season. It appeared he lost focus. Sometimes players get paid and they lose the hunger. Hope it's not the case with Kerley
Yeah I couldn't see cutting him unless there was some real crazy shakeup at WR. I mean, he was a bit off this year, but I would expect a bounce back especially with a better OC and hopefully a legitimate threat opposite Decker
If they cut Kerley, it will be like losing Cotchery. A dependable WR that produces, is a good teammate and isnt a prima dona. Bad move by the Jets if they did this, unless they are clearing the decks for Demarius.
tch, its a bad move then too. its not like his 3 or so mil a year should conflict with any other much larger deal.
New personnel dept. It's very possible that the new people value Kerley much differently than the old guys did. If that's the case they may not be interested in him at the kind of price the Jets re-signed him at. That's one of the things that fresh eyes produces, different valuations on players. I'm not saying this is the case for sure but it wouldn't be a bad thing at all. The Jets have needed a fresh perspective on talent for awhile now.
They have plenty of cap space. He was underused. And came on later in the season after dropping a few balls earlier. But in reality he didn't have the number of targets that he should have had.
Kerley isn't getting cut, whether Gailey plans on running a spread or a read option or whatever, versatile receivers that can play out of the backfield the slot or outside the hashes are too valuable And he's not a painful cap hit for a team with top 5 cap space, this topic makes no sense to me. Yeah he had an off year, so did the rest of the team
I don't think he gets cut either but he's expendable going forward. If we draft an outside WR and retain Harvin I don't see him with much of a role next year besides Punt Returner. In no way would cutting him be anything like letting Cotchery walk way back when.
There are really no positives by cutting him. Not like we're in cap hell and need to make these kinda moves. Keep him and hope for a bounce back season in a new offense. He's a more then fine 3rd WR if the QB can get him the ball.
The Jets are already in for $3.84 mil which was guaranteed at signing. This includes his '15 contract. He's been paid in advance.
If the Jets keep Harvin or bring in a FA Wr it imo rules out drafting Wr with the 6th pick and Kerley doesn't factor into it. If they draft a slot guy in the mids then you have the luxury of a lot of depth I agree about Cotchery because the Jets were hurting for cap space and decided to try to go cheap at the position and it bit them hard, in this situation they don't need the cap money and drafting a Wr early doesn't affect the slot
I used to be a big fan of Kerley. And he played with an awful Qb the last two years. But the stats say he just completed his fourth year, when you'd expect him to be really hitting his stride, and instead his numbers are going down. Even comparing Smith's first year with his second Kerley saw reductions in catches per game and ypc. Concededly his stats in his third year were affected by his injury. And last yaer Decker was probably getting some of the catches he might have gotten. But his numbers do nonetheless not inspire confidence he is elevating his game. The new regime might well be looking at Kerley as not promising going forward.
^ LOL Cromartie has a bad 3-4 years but bounces back with a team that has good safety support and you insult people who don't want him on the team, Kerley has one bad year with a terrible QB situation (so did every other receiver on the team) and he's done for, real consistent there guy
