http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/columns/story?columnist=clayton_john&id=3151445 Kellen Clemens hasn't distinguished himself in his first opportunity to run with the starting job. At the moment, Clemens' competitor for the 2008 starting job is unknown. But the Jets face a tough decision on Chad Pennington; he is on the books for a $4.8 million salary and an escalator clause could take his salary to $6 million in 2008. Unhappy about his benching, Pennington probably will ask to be traded or released. That would leave the Jets in the market for a veteran to compete against Clemens. It could cost well over $3 million to bring in Grossman, Culpeppper or another veteran free agent, so the Jets have to decide whether they can do better than Pennington before they release him. Pennington lacks Clemens' arm strength, but he can move the chains and help a team get to the playoffs. If he sticks around, he could beat out Clemens. a few things to say.... I still dont know if Kellen Clemens is the future, but... 1) Please no Chad Pennington 2) Please no Rex Grossman 3) Please no Daunte Culpepper
Why don't we just sign John Clayton, line him up in the shotgun formation, snap him the ball...and tell our offensive lineman to move out of the way -- hoping that he gets ripped in half by a defensive tackle hitting him low and an end hitting him high. I hate that guy...he's so incredibly nerdy. Why can't they just get a normal person to do the NFL's Injury Report and Transaction. Mortensen is decent. I bet Clayton was bullied in high school. The guys at ESPN probably give John Clayton swirlies in the toilet.
I agree with Clayton here. He might look a bit nerdy, but the guy knows his stuff. I sat near him during the draft last year, he's a workaholic. He was on the phone for 3/4 of the draft and the rest of the time was taking notes. I respect his opinions a lot more than some of the other talking heads in the media. He has some great connections too so I like his insider info a lot.
Yep, why did you think Mangini thought long and hard before benching CP. He was not as emo as most people on this board. He knew benching CP would be the end of that era and could present problems like this. Like I have been saying, I sure hope Clemens starts to show something, anything, otherwise the Jets are phucked for another few years.
I'm surprised he made no mention of the fact that they could draft a QB or trade for one with all of the potential people they have to trade.
Well, maybe. Certainly not a starter. Brady Quinn may be made available and possibly for a second round pick or a second round rated player.
Don't be hatin' on Clayton, yo! He's very nerdy but that's a good thing. He's a reporter. You don't want your inside scoop coming from some douchebag like Sean Salisbury or Mark Schlereth. I wouldn't mind bringing in Sage Rosenfels to compete with Kellen Clemens. Also, I wouldn't mind picking up Colt Brennan in the fourth or fifth round, just in case. That would make our third QB the long-term, long-shot project, second QB would be the veteran, third year KC as starter.
Is Kellen the second coming? Not from what I've seen so far, which means nothing. For every Marino/Elway that show 'it' from day one, many more QB's take some time to excel. We've invested a second round pick in the guy, let's relax a bit and not get nuts. You absolutely DO NOT draft a QB in the second round, let him play 7 games on a losing team and then waste another high draft pick on a QB 3 years later. Until it ever gets to the point of him holding back the team, let him develop...
Vilma for Quinn \o/ FWIW, no way is Chad the starter here next year. If we get Grossman it means we recovered both of the picks we gave up for D-Rob, does that make him less of a bust?
Did anyone in the ESPN wisdom tree mention that KC's performance may be directly proportional to the poor play of the offensive and defensive lines, which were the same relative factors that magnified Chad's weak spots? If anyone thought that any QB was going to step into our system this year and right the ship and make us look like world beaters, they have not been watching the same team I have been watching. There are many serious problems that have not been rectified besides just a QB replacement: 1. Sticking to 3-4, even though we are clearly better suited to the 4-3 and being vehemantly stubborn about it. 2. At times, unimaginative (even predictably boring) play calling 3. Poor offensive line play - infact, our offensive line this year is nearly as bad as the 2005 offensive line and that is serious. 4. Our defensive line stinks. We have watched mediocre running backs take it to us all year; it is completely inexcusable, but brought about by some genius's feeling that DRob is the strong man in the middle of the 3-4 defensive line. Just stupid............ 5. I know there is more, but I wanted to hit on the biggies. To say that Kellen is not living up to standards is just stupid. Nothing has been done to the supporting cast; it's the same one Chad had. The results are not that much different. The only thing that is evident right now is KC has a stronger arm and can make a lot of throws that Chad can not. That offers hope for next year. Give KC some talent around him on the offensive line where we actually do have a running game for teams to worry about and let our defense fairly consistantly hold the opposing rushing game to under 100 yards a game and then let's talk about KC's performance. Until then, I wish people would just shut up and let the kid get some experience for next year. At the end of next year a detailed report card is very in play and fair.
That was his biggest coachng mistake this season. Pennington should have been held out with the ankle injury for several weeks.
Which would have led to? An earlier evaluation that Clemens is not ready? CP sitting on the bench when he is still technically the stater? Mangini made a clear cut decision to change the starting QB.
Pennington would not have looked as awful. (His stats deteriorated as the ankle grew weaker during the games...) Clemens would have gotten 4 or five weeks against Buffalo and Cincinatti and Miami, Pennington would have gotten healthy, and we would probably be in contention for a Wild Card. You have to realise that Pennington had essentially the same injury as Coles. Coles can run out for a play or two, then go rest for a play or two, where Pennington is taking every snap, with limited mobility, and limited ability to firmly plant, which does not help his already weak arm...
he can move the chains by going 3 and out and punting where the chains have to be moved for the opposing team
This shouldnt be a comparison between KC & CP. We rode CP as far as he could take us. His best years were back during the days of the playoff game at Pittsburgh. 2 shoulder surgeries had finally caught up to him. He had ZERO arm strength -- not a good characteristic for an NFL QB. The last games he played showed how CBs had finally figured him out. Its time for the JETS to move on, give Clemens the starting job for 2008 & building a supporting cast for him on offense. If he doesnt show improvement in 2008, then we can have this "get rid of him" discussion. I can't believe that we already want to pull the trigger on this guy & bring in garbage like Grossman, Culpepper, Volek.
