"The Jets did get under the $94.5 million by releasing six players and restructuring the contracts of wide receiver Laverneus Coles, defensive end Shaun Ellis, deep snapper James Dearth and guard Brandon Moore. They informed center Kevin Mawae that he is going to be cut, but they don't need his release to get under the cap. They are still working to restructure the contract of guard Pete Kendall to see if he can stay on the roster. The Jets have until Monday to try to restructure the contract of quarterback Chad Pennington. At first, the Jets wanted Pennington to reduce his salary from $9 million to $1 million. There was some progress during negotiations during the week, but nothing is done and won't be until next week. "

Confirmation Mawae was cut not for cap reasons, Pennington's restructure/cut and Abraham trade will allow the Jets to pursue some free agents.

One question, how much could a restructure of Dearth's contract really save -- $5, $10?

If the a new CBA gets passed, this would mean that we would have about $10 mil to use on free agents. If Pennington restuctures, which he will, that will free up even more. I like where mgmt is going with the team by freeing up money for a rebuilding processes.

well, didn't Dearth sign like a ten year contract or something? So you prorate 10 bucks over ten yeras - ah hell, I don't know how this works.

It doesn't sound like Clayton has all of his facts in order here.

Once they trade Abraham they will have about $10 millon tp spend on FA's and the drafted players. Then add in the money saved from restructuring Pennington, Kendall, Robertson and cutting Mawae and they will have quite a bit of room. Probably somewhere between $15 and 20 millon. If there is a new CBA signed then add in another $10 millon.

I still think it will be a rebuilding year, but with the cap situation in order it should have more chance of being a speedier process.

WELL SO FAR SO GOOD for the new HC and MT. Geeze when was the last time the JETS were 10 million or more under the cap. Lets hope in the draft these two make all the right moves and if they do I think we pretty much set for a while with this new coach. Go Jets

Why is Dearth still on the team? Dreesen can long snap and unless Em plans on running some 4 TE formations, there is no need for him.

The Day TO signs with the Jets is either the day I turn in my green and white jersey and wish the franchise well or is the day that a green light means stop, a red light means go, up means down, left means right....

We still will have rookies (including potentially 2 top-10 picks) to also get under the cap.

Could they possibly move Kendall back to center? I know it's not the ideal situation, but it may be a stop-gap move unless they sign/draft one

If they are under 94.5 now, they could be 20 mil or more under if they restruct Pennington and trade Abe, cuz that would be like 15 mil more at least
