As someone who's followed the Jets from Kentucky my entire life, I've never understood the fascination with Benigno. Did he used to have good takes or has he always been this way? I personally can't stand the guy and try to avoid any of his commentary.
He's the prototypical "NY Sports Guy". The guy you can meet in most any bar or tavern expounding upon all the wrongs in the world, especially in the sports world. The thing is, he doesn't say anything different than what most of us already know, he's just louder. I prefer to save my hearing.
He's exceptionally knowledgeable about team history. The guy can recall play calls in a blowout game in 1981.
That and he is just your die hard Jets fan that's been in misery since Super Bowl 3. Hopefully he gets to see another Super Bowl, his reaction would be legendary after all these years.
i used to listen to him overnight back in college and him being so passionate about the jets is why i like him. he has the platform to say what we are all thinking to the wider audience and to the jets brass.
His sports takes are just like my dad's. Something is either the best ever or it's the worst ever. I find myself understanding it more and more.
hes really going to blow up this week after Bellicheat wipes his ass with Saleh and Zach this Sunday.
To an extent, this is true. Most of the time (90%+) he says what I wish I could say about the team's ownership, front office and coaching staff in a forum (the radio) where the owner, front office and coaching staff could conceivably hear it.
He is us. Did you know that in the early days of WFAN he was just a listener who called in and was invited to be in a competition to work a one time short show? He was such a hit with the fans and management that he was invited back and got his own show. I'm pretty sure he worked in the building trades before that. He has a huge memory bank and never felt the need to censor his opinions because he didn't grow up in the business where many are afraid to speak their piece.
Joe’s entertaining with the Jets. I’m sure for some Mets fans he is as well. But he is so god awful in the dog days of summer when he’s whining about the Mets.
Growing up in KY, as you can probably imagine, I never really listened to WFAN. Thanks for the additional information though. That definitely does paint him in a new light for me, even if I don't particularly enjoy his style of commentary!
