A 10 year contract extension would be good enough for Rhodes.

If Herm and Bradway were still running things, it would be a 10 year extension. :)

If he has 2 years why dont we give him an extension next year? I guess maybe the FO is worried his stock will go up next year if he has another great season. Either ways he needs to be given an extension as the guy will be a cornerstone of our defense for years to come.

With all the cap room this year, I don't think there is a reason to wait if Rhodes is willing to negotiate. This is an Eagles-type strategy -- trying to sign promising players to extensions early before their contract demands get outrageous. Also, the available free agent talent is trending down the next few years, so it is more important to attempt to retain you best players since finding a replacement won't be so easy.

Considering he's young and the only impact player on our D to not tie this guy up would be insane. He is one of two or three players on our team who you can build an elite team around.

the longer we wait, the more expensive he's going to get. and if he makes the pro bowl next year (its very likely IMO) hes going to ask for a lot of money...thats why we should re-sign him right now.

i say keep rhodes at his current contract this yr for cap purposes. plus 1 great year doesnt mean much. what if he tore ligaments this yr?

i know he needs to be locked up long term, but honestly from a business standpoint we should hold the re-signing for a yr. then again the arguments about his stock shooting up do seem likely. but the fact he has 2 yrs left makes me say what i did.

I'm glad we don't wait till he only has one year left. He was a big contributer last season, and by extending his contract now, we show him that we want to keep him, and we avoid having to pay a really outrageous dollar amount when he improves again next year.

The people that agree are wrong. Chad is the most valuable Jets player, hands down. Take Chad off of last years team and we have way less wins than if you take Rhodes off the team. I love Rhodes, but c'mon.

come on now, the same can be said about cotchery who had only 1 good season and who was more of a disappointment his first two seasons yet we offered him a big contract. rhodes has been our starter since day 1, he hasnt missed a single game since we drafted him and IMO he was the best safety last season (along with wilson from the cards). we have the cap room to re-sign him, we're not going to sign clements or adalius thomas so why wait another year?

Yeah but nobody noticed because all the ~~~'s were blocking out Rhodes name.

Great move. There isnt a defensive player on this team that comes close to being an impact player like Rhodes. He is by far the MVP of the defense and turning out to be a true leader. Amazingly, Mangini saw this during the minicamps and challenged him to be a leader. Not only did he become one..but backed it up with a probowl type season. He will only get better.

Hes more valuable then anyone thats be signed or extended by far. This kid needs to be locked up for good.

Everyone has the potential to get injured.

This and the Cotchery signing all signal to other players that the Jets take care of their players. Any boost in rep the Jets can get is worth it due to the slim pickings in FA this year and the next few.

Totally agree. It shows the other players...shut up and put up the numbers..you will be rewarded. Have breakout seasons..and you will get the dollars and the loyalty. Sure, in a perfect NFL world, you might want to wait till the last minute and protect your cap from injuries etc but this is the right move.

Lets face it, its better then pulling a redskin or a raider move and going out spending like maniacs on one or two year wonders...or guys in the ealry 30's playing for their retirement fund.

thats not what the redskins do. the redskins sign overrated bigname players in their mid 20s or early 30s to huge contracts.

what we do right now is exactly what the eagles have been doing for years. lock up your young stars before they become pro bowlers.
