The New York Jets announced Friday the signing of Bryan Thomas to a contract extension. The announcement was made by Jets? General Manager Mike Tannenbaum. "We?re pleased that Bryan Thomas is going to remain a Jet,? Tannenbaum said. ?He has worked very hard and developed in our program. We'd like to thank Brian Mackler for working in a professional manner during these negotiations. We agree that it?s a fair deal for both sides.? Thomas has already registered a career high in sacks with a team leading five while recording 58 tackles and a fumble recovery this season. He has a total of 11.5 sacks in his career in which he has started 30 of the 72 games he has played for the Jets. ?Bryan?s approach and hard work both on the field and in the classroom earned him this opportunity,? Head Coach Eric Justice. Thomas was a four-year starter at UAB and broke the Conference USA record for sacks with 35. He was born in Birmingham, AL and graduated from Minor High School. Tannenbaum worked with Thomas? agent Brian Mackler to finalize the terms. ?I am happy that Mike and I were able to come to agreeable terms to ensure that Bryan will be a New York Jet for the foreseeable future,? Mackler said. ?Bryan would have had many opportunities in the free agent market and the possibility to earn more money. With the direction that Coach Mangini and the Jets organization are taking, Bryan decided that this is where he wanted to be.? Mangini said. ?He?s done everything we?ve asked of him and he exemplifies the type of player we want on defense. Bryan is a versatile player who we can count on each week to make plays.? ?I've enjoyed my time being a Jet and I am excited about the present and the future of this team,? Thomas said. ?This is where I started my career and I am grateful that the Jets believe in me. I look forward to achieving success under the leadership of Mr. Johnson, Mike Tannenbaum and Coach Mangini.? Thomas, in his fifth year, came to the Jets as the 22nd overall pick in the 2002 draft out of the University of Alabama-Birmingham, where he got his degree in Criminal Justice. I'm up in the air on how I feel about this. If he can continue to play like he has this year then it will turn out huge for us to have him as the DE/OLB. I'll reserve judgement for now.
I just got a text message about this (some crap i signed up for) and came to the forum immediately, lol. but yeah, it seems like this guy is finally starting to make strides from his potential to actual progress. This is good news!
Hopefully Thomas can follow in the direction of James Farrior... Not that they are similar players, but they were in similar situations.
I also am glad this got done. I was very down on him before but he has definitely made some strides this year. We have to hope it is because the new scheme is working to his strengths, and not just because it was his contract year. I'd be curious to see the details of the deal, it will probably be leaked in the next day or two....
I guess that all of you "Thomas is a bust" haters will have a little more time to air your grievances. Good for him. That being said, we still need a better pash rush threat coming from the other OLB side.
Very nice! I'm glad we got this out of the way, I'm really suprised with the way Thomas has been playing this year. I think we should try and sign Cotchery to an extension as well.
I like this signing. For us to sign him long term Mangini must have seem something he likes in him. Thomas is also playing very well in the new system and probally signed for pretty cheap. Guess he will be at one of the OLB spots for a few years with someone hopefully from this upcoming draft starting opposite of him.
I love this signing !!! The dude is playing a position for the first time , and hes excelled. He is only going to get better. Glad to see BT playing good this year
Also, he was really the only "big" FA we had to sign this year. All other Jets FA's this year are: B.J. Askew Dave Ball Anthony Clement Adrian Jones Norm Katnik Jamar Martin Ryan Myers Patrick Ramsey We should have plenty of room going into Free Agency this year to make some moves. Should be another exciting offseason.
Yeah I got mixed reactions on this. Obviously he has turned it around in this scheme, benefiting alot. But ehh, I wanted the upgrade with Adalius Thomas, but we'll see. I really want to see how much he got.
Mr. T is making moves, i love it. Lets get rhodes locked up longterm next. BT will only continue to grow as a player in the 3-4 and hopefully as will his pass rush skills
