my gosh it was awful tonight, sheppard made one nice play then was not even close in coverage on a few, coleman was awful, cole makes a couple nice plays then gets toasted... Lowery plays up to normal getting beat quite a few times.. The safties nothing of impact.. It was disappointing from what should be a strong point of the team against a weaker passing team.. Darrelle revis cant comeback soon enough so guys like coleman and lowery can move down in the depth chart.. Even losing strickland was a loss
Anybody else see Dwight Lowery take a dive on a Laron McClain running play? I saw it once and I thought, "maybe he just lost his footing." Then I watched the replay... I mean, I know he's a big back, but you gotta at least try, man!
I saw that dive! I was screaming at the TV that you have to at LEAST TRY and tackle someone...geezzz...that was horrible!
I remember watching that and SCREAMING at the tv. Lowery didn't even make an attempt. He just went down into the fetal position.
I think in this type of defensive scheme he would be a better fit at safety than CB. We need cover corners who can sit on a WRs hip and if they do get beat, possess good recovery speed to make up for it. We blitz like crazy and will give up big plays with players like him. He's a zone CB ala Donnie Abraham/Ronde Barber(obviously not as good) he's not really built for man to man his lack of speed gets him toasted. He has excellent ball skills, a solid tackler with decent size 5'11" 200 pounds. He will either be moved to safety, cut and go to a cover 2 scheme or be out of the NFL within 3 years.
As far as sheppard goes, i think you're refering to the 2 passes in the middle of the field where ravens recievers were wide open and sheppard came to make the tackles, they werent his assignments. coleman blew coverage on one and leonard blitzed and noone dropped back on the other.
It was pretty scary considering the passrush was there. Lowery gave us exactly what I expect from him. He is too slow to play man, I've been saying it since day one. Sheppard made a nice play or two but was also toasted a couple times. It will be better with Revis in there obviously, but I was unimpressed to say the least with the 1st team DBs.
Other than Lowery's flop I thought he played pretty well tonight. The pressure wasn't as good as I would've expected a times, and that's when the defense really got lit up. Still, you have to expect the Jets D to give up plays every so often. You don't run an aggressive defense and contain all big plays.
the other thing to remember this is still the preseason. We have seen a huge number of blitzes this preseason already, but its still preseason, its still a watered down defense and a lot of vanilla blitz packages... obviously some of the good stuff is thrown in, but not all of it...
I agree w/ you on Lowery, I thought he did a good job overall and when your best CB is out it will make the secondary look alot weaker. I am not really worried about the D, my only concern is getting Revis and Jenkins back in the lineup.
I thought the secondary actually held their own pretty well. Flacco carved them up at times but he was putting passes exactly where they should be. Sometimes you just can't defend that kind of stuff.
I dont really agee. I know that is what we would assume considering its only preseason, but I saw a lot of looks last night. The blitzs looked anything but vanilla with guys coming in from everywhere.
Lowery should be nicknamed toast. He's a solid tackler (thank god) and does well making plays by stripping the ball but he gets picked on. No "Revis was across from him" excuse this preseason.
YES!!!!!! I've been a Lowrey supporter, but that pissed me the hell off. Me taking that kind of dive makes sense. But you're a freakin professional football player! At least try to arm tackle him or actually hit his legs or something!
That's not true. When Lowery and Coleman were on the field, Coleman got picked on. When Revis does get back, it'll be Sheppard who gets picked on. Lowery is a lot closer to Sheppard in talent than say Drew Coleman. He easily is the third best cornerback the Jets have, and I expect him to have a good year in the nickel.
I think Lowery is maybe an average Cover 2 CB but Jesus he is a huge liability in man coverage. The guy is just not enough of an athlete. Coleman is brutal too. We can comfort ourselves in the idea that these 2 guys will not see too much of the field except in Nickel and Dime packages (barring injuries of course).
Actually, I think one of those 2 passes over the middle was his man in coverage. Regardless, because my memory is for shit and I don't remember how good (or not good) Sheppard was before he became persona non grata in Philly, these games are my only yard stick for him. And lets face it, teams will throw at him and not Revis once Revis is in. So my question is (for those who remember and may know better), what can we really expect from him? The secondary did worry me last night.
I only disagree in that I don't think the Ravens are a weaker passing team this year. Flacco looks very very sharp and I think he is the big reason the Jets had their troubles more then anything. My guess is that Flacco will pass the ball a good bit more then last year. There was talk during the game about it if I recall corrrectly.
