Is any one besides me worried about the jets running back situation. I know our O-line is going to be good, but even a good O-line can't make Curtis look good at this point. That guy is OLD! Leon Washington is exciting but hes not an every down back yet. Blalock is a product of the Chiefs O-line and will never be good for us. Cedric Houston looks to be little more than a goal line runnning back. Until we get a much better running back, I do not think we can win more than 7 or 8 games.
The JETS are in a "REBUILDING" phase, I'm normally an optimist, but I'm ALSO a realist. This team is going to be good but NOT this year. We have another draft to get all or most the RIGHT players to fit the Mangini system, plus our NEW QB is at least a year from being the EVERYDAY starter. We'll be lucky to win 7 - 8 games even if we had Bush in the backfield. We NEED a playmaking receiver (in my opinion other than Coles we have nothing more than glorified possesion receivers)and QB that can get the ball downfield, a Pass Rushing DE along w/a playmaking RB so we're at least 3 - 4 players from being where we need to be. So trust a RB to be the FUTURE of this team will probably be picked up in next years draft OR Washington, JUST MIGHT PAN OUT!
We have plenty of talent at RB. The jets will not only be fine but be a good running team next year. I would expect all the guys to play and gets yards.
I agree with this, and I also think that they need a year of jelling within the new offensive line before they make a decision on a franchise back. I believe the runningback situation could be a low priority for our FO at the moment.
Thats it in a nutshell. Perfectly put. Probably one of the few positions that when you get "your guy", there is no transition...a RB comes in from day one and is what he is. Doubt that guy is on the roster...and next year is the year it will be addressed.
Maybe our RB situation is not viewed as a solid endeavor for the future. But I embrace the fact that we are taking the steps to bolster the Oline first. When this occurs, we can truly see our talent level at both RB and QB. After last years debacle with the Oline, judging certain talent levels would be unfair to a certain extent. I think most Jets fans are in a wait and see mode with our new coaching staff.
Cedric is going to take over the starting role after this season and washington is going to be like willie parkeer(fast and a playmayker BUT doesnt see that much action)
How exactly do you know this? You have absolutely nothing to back that statement up. The year before last year he WON THE RUSHING TITLE! Thats #1 Running Back in the entire NFL! Last year we had next to no help at all on the oline! It does not take a brain surgeon to understand that last years running game was the result of terrible coaching and a terrible offensive line. You ask any coach in the NFL if they would ignore a healthy Curtis Martin this year behind a good Oline.
i like houston and washington and think both will be good for us. But im not ready to give up on martin and i dont think anyone else should be either. Hopefully martin starts the whole season but shares time with our other two rbs.
Loving it. I don't see any reason to believe that LSU's RB Joseph Addai who went in the first round is more talented.
you cats did weel selecting d-brick but you really have no running backs if martin doesn't return to form. good thing is i don't think he is finished. i think he will put up solid numbers for you guys next season. i think you guys need someone to take over though and houdston doesn't appear to be that guy. maybe he is, it was only one year but it doesn't seem like it
Nice to see a thread that has some football accumen attached! The RB situation will be fine as is this year. This team is in full rebuild, and the core positions are getting fixed first. The skill position guys like an RB will get drafted next year. The O line is better, but I don't think it's quite fixed just yet. We did get a highly regarded QB to develop, which takes time, so things are pretty much right on track. I wonder if Washington is a guy we could use in a multiple of ways? Yeah, hes short, but so was Bruce Harper, and he was a weapon. I've said this many times.... and it's only my opinion, but an RB is the last piece of the puzzle a team needs. As such, like abyz said, it's a low priority.... to many other things have to be addressed first. The one area I'm not comfortable with, is WR. Most of the time, I said most, there are exceptions, is they often don't come into their own until the third year they are in the NFL. I don't see a weapon there yet.... maybe through FA....
This is true, the fact that Richard Seymour got 8 sacks one year was amazing. 3-4 DE are just really 4-3 DTs, they are pretty much just taking on O-linemen so the LBs can get through.
You guys shouldn't put all of your faith in Washington as the franchise back. He wasn't a first day pick for a reason. He has alot of upside but the most he can be IMHO is the second back in a two back set. We still would need a premier between the tackles guy and Cedric Houston isn't that guy either.
He may have lead the league but he wasn't close to the best running back in the league in 04 and he looked slow and tired in the playoffs. Players do fall off the clif when they age and Martin is at the age when running backs are done in the NFL.
To a degree you're correct but if it were that simple you could easily just put three fat guys on the line and it would work fine. To be really successful with a 3/4, you need DE's who are big enough not only to take on O-linemen but strong enough to be able to push back blockers into the backfield to screw up running plays while still being quick enough that when they see pass they can quickly change over to pass rush penetration mode. That type of DE is rare which is why Seymour got all of that money.
Guys like Seymour aren't rare they are extinct. The guy is one of the top 3 or 4 defensive players in the league and has been for years. Seymour would be great in any system and he is one of the key reasons why the Pats front 7is so good.
