Around a decade ago the 40 year old Bates was considered an up and comer working under Mike Shanahan in Denver. After Shanahan was let go, he moved to USC for a year, working with new Jets offensive coordinator John Morton. Bates followed Pete Carroll to the Seahawks as offensive coordinator but was fired after one year. He landed with the Bears for one year in 2012 but was not retained when Lovie Smith was fired. He hasn’t coached for a team since that 2012 season. It is not necessarily significant, but it is worth nothing that Bates worked with Jay Cutler, who is expected to be available this offseason, in both Denver and Chicago. He has apparently been working for a private coaching company in recent times. He actually had a previous stint with the Jets as quarterbacks coach for a year in 2005, a year where the quarterback position was decimated by season-ending injuries to starter Chad Pennington and backup Jay Fielder in a Week 3 loss to Jacksonville.
I've always liked bates ever since that 2005 season where he managed to make Brooke Bollinger look like a NFL QB. I still hate Toilet Bowles but I have to admit he is compiling a pretty good coaching staff. It does raise the question what the heck happened the first time he put his coaching staff together? Word on the street is that the first time he was just hiring his friends.
Rather than post again on this thread, I'll write two posts now. If we hire Bates: He's a bad coach because he's dumb enough to come here. If we don't hire Bates: He's a good coach because he's smart enough not to come here.
Well, he can't be any worse then what we have now. If his work with Bollinger is an example of his teaching ability....then it's a good move. Both our QB's need instruction so do your job.
Or he is smart enough to know he can make a real difference to these young QB and he wants to be in NY, protecting those poor souls from some really shitty fans and absent of any real coaching.
I mean, consider the quality of QB, how bad can this guy be? The only thing that is bothering me is this guy has been in mothballs for quite some time now. Gailey had been out of the game for quite some time too and his comeback came with mixed results.
heheh...The Flying Dutchman gets another matey Who knows? Guy could be decent..K Greene is on board with this crew too Listen..cant hurt your resume if you do a good job in your department So I think that can be the only motivator here..certainly not the Bubba effect
Adding to his resume.... Bates then followed John Morton to the NY Jets as QB coach for the 2017 season. He was not retained when Todd "toilet" Bowles was fired following the 2017 season.
What difference does it make? How many coaches want to waddle in here to get their legs broken? All these turkeys will be lame ducks by Thanksgiving.
Done Deal. Bates is the QB coach. http://www.newyorkjets.com/news/art...a91d0-61da-4c8b-89de-0506d0c78d08?campaign=tw
