Jets eyeing more DL duties for ?OLB? Gholston

    An article from Profootballweekly.com

"In Rex Ryan?s ?organized chaos? defense, it can be difficult to label an individual player with one specific position. So, the fact that Vernon Gholston, who?s listed as an outside linebacker, took the majority of his reps as a backup defensive end to Shaun Ellis in Week Two needs to be kept in perspective. But it is somewhat telling that he spent far more time with his hand on the ground as a lineman than standing up on the second level. Some of the rationale for the switch can be attributed to the fact that the Jets played mostly nickel defense vs. the Patriots, but they predominantly keep just three down linemen in the sub-package and subsequently don?t need to stack an additional defender on the line. Basically, Gholston?s not fooling anybody at linebacker, so the Jets are starting to turn him loose to do what he does best: rush the quarterback."

    ABOUT TIME!!!

I predicted Ghoslton would get 8 sacks this season if Jets just made him put his damn hand in the dirt as a down lineman and rush the QB!

Took a TERRIBLE rookie season and a new defensive minded head coach to PUT GHOLSTON TO DO THE SAME EXACT THING HE DID IN COLLEGE! Which was why he was drafted No. 6 overall.

He was getting good pressure in the game against Hou and even had a tackle for a loss on a run play. Let him loose damn it!

Your logic is flawed. Lamarr Woodley played with his hand in the dirt in college, and so did Demarcus Ware and Shawn Merriman. What do all 3 of those have in common? They all play OLB now and are great at it.

I would seriously just sit Gholston down and be like "you are a athletic freak and you should act as such, just go crazy out there on the field !"

I got you. My point is that they saw it wasn't working with Gholston and instead if changing his the strategy on how to use him effectively...they tried to change him. If they put him in a good amount of snaps as a DE last season. He'd be great as a DE right now.

    I got your point...Just saying.

Your logic is flawed. Your ASSuming that the ghost is a athlete. He's just a gym room freak. They should let him gain some weight and play him at end. We saw how awesome of a LB his is, right?

You have to remember Mangenius drafted a kid who Started playing football in 10th grade, and has made it to the NFL. He really has miniscule amounts of experience playing this game in general, let alone change his position in the most complex D in football. Its not his fault he was drafted 6th, he didnt hold a gun to anyones head. He IS a freak, he made it to the pros playing a sport for only 5-6 years, ridic but he needs to be groomed

Lamarr Woodley is a good example of the point your making it. I think using Ware and Merriman as good examples aren't great examples because even though they play OLB they rush the passer on almost every play. Woodley drops back into coverage more than Merriman or Ware. There are more responsibilites for Woodley. Gholston is just a tease right now. He shows flashes, but doesn't finish and get to the QB. Yeah he's better, but he isn't where he needs to be. I'll at least defend Gholston by saying this, Calvin Pace looked very much like a Vernon Gholston early in his career and he has become a solid LB and when he comes back I think he is going to be very good. I think if Rex had him in baltimore last year he could have definitely been a 10+sack guy.

another Gholston thread with the same argument. uggghhh.

how about this - if this CS can't make him a good OLB and has to put his hand back in the dirt, then he has to be a 4-3 DE. Dwight Freeney can't play 3-4 OLB, neither can Osi or Michael Strahan. The kid wasn't drafted correctly - Mangini fucked up.

Its that simple. Chris Long would be better in a 3=4, and Gholston would be better in a 4-3. IMO.

That's wrong, the 34 DE is more about getting double teams and pushing back the pocket than getting sacks.

Absolutely. I came to agree with this after I read about the 34 D vs. the 43 D. The DL in 3-4 defense will not rack up sacks. Neither will they have great number of tackles, as evident by the stats of one of the best NT in the AFC, Jenkins. I think he has 3 tackles in 2 games. The whole point of the 3 defensive linemen is to try and get double teamed, free up a LB to blitz unblocked. Or as u suggested, just pushing back the pocket.

As for Gholston, I think he can be a decent 3-4 end if he can add up some more fat muscles. He'll be huge in a 4-3 as a DE, not as great in a 3-4 as a DE. Knowing Gholston, he couldn't get a sack playing while single teamed, let alone double teamed.

They should have him carry the equipment onto the field. He looks really strong.

The problem with ghost is that he simply doesn't have that killer instinct that you need to play football. He's just too nice a guy. He has all the gifts but he simply cannot summon up the RAGE, that wanting to KILL the person opposite you, that foaming at the mouth wanting to rip the head off of ANYBODY that has the ball, that you must have to play defense in the NFL.

    WRONG!

So many hopeful fans seem to think this is true. They seem to cling to the idea that being strong and fast = "all the gifts." This is simply wrong, wrong, wrong. He has all the gifts for bobsled, but this is football. Call up Herschel Walker and get this kid some advice on pushing something really heavy really fast. VG could do this!

But not on my football field. Please. I have no room for bobsledders on my field.

    terrible player

  18. How the hell does a 6'4 260 lb jacked up man who benches 225 38 times and runs a 4.55 NOT translate to the football field? Are you serious? I mean...for a bobsledder, he happens to own Ohio State's single season sack record. Maybe Jamaica should have noticed him and made him an offer for the next winter olympics.

The guy has not been great so far...but claiming he doesnt have the physical skills to be very successful is just plain silly.

I'm sure that was the first thing Rex tried.
