26 years old, never been in trouble, looking for an opportunity, probably will work hard in camp to try to win a job. How is this not a win-win if he works out? He's built more like a Dustin Keller receiving TE than a blocker. Maybe he is a complementary piece for Quincy Enunwa to give Enunwa a breather now and then? Unless there's dirt under the carpet this is exactly the kind of player the Jets should be bringing in for a look-see this year. He's low risk/high reward potential at a position where the Jets have nothing to speak of. He's not a guy you'd give a lot of money too or real guarantees but on a tryout contract? He's exactly what the doctor ordered for what ails the Jets.
Enunwa is an H-back who got a lot of snaps in the slot and outside last year after Eric Decker got injured. He's best used as a mobile piece in the offense to create mismatches down the field and reinforce the blocking on the edges. That's how he was best used by Gailey. No idea how he will work in the WCO but the Jets had a very similar piece in Richie Anderson the last time they ran a straight WCO.
Looks like a quality receiver, but poor blocker. Especially since this would likely be near the vet minimum, sounds good to me. At this point, just need some depth and at least this guy is young, has experience, and some strengths.
Enunwa will be wr1 or 2 depending on deckers health/presence on the roster and would be a wr on any roster. gailey gimmicked him up out of necessity but lets not get carried away. dudes a wr and going to be a good one
Of course, I would prefer that Rivera is a better blocker, but beggars can't be choosers. The Jets need players at the TE position. He's young and cheap. IMO they'll look to keep 3 on the final roster. ASJ will miss the first two games, and he missed several last season and in previous seasons with injuries. He cannot be counted on 100%. Rivera is proven in the NFL. He could help the Jets' QBs as a safety valve and assuming the Jets draft a 2-way TE, in a two-TE offense, could be effective as well.
How sad is it that we even need to consider whether a player has been in trouble when looking at these professional athletes? Sent from my KIW-L24 using Tapatalk
Yes I'm sure all of a sudden he is gonna become a star on a team with no QB and a rookie Offensive Coordinator....Lmao.
It has nothing to do with becoming a star. It has to do with a low opportunity cost for the Jets which might turn into a real player for them. The Jets should have 15 guys in camp next year that are at the same level of cost/risk/reward that Rivera is. If 2 or 3 of them turn into contributors the Jets have helped the rebuild process along. Good franchises like the Pats and the Steelers always have a bunch of guys like this on the camp roster and then a few of them go to special teams and maybe one fills a position in the rotation on the field a few to the practice squad and everybody else gets cut. That's how you build up depth over time. Its why Belichik drafts 9 players a year instead of 7 and picks up other teams leavings, almost always young guys with no record to speak of on or off the field, and runs a camp in which except for QB anybody could win just about any job if they really turned it up and showed they had something to offer.
The Pats and Steelers are considered great orginizations because they have had franchise QBs for 10 years plus..Copying what they do would be pointless. We arent in a position to do what great orginizations do because we arent close to great.
Doing what bad organizations do will always make you bad in the end. Doing what good organizations do will set you up to find the franchise QB and be good in the end. The Jets are a bad organization right now. Doing things that good organizations routinely do is a way to begin to become a good organization.
