I, for one, agree that we've had a problem with overpaying the rookies to some extent. I'm just not too worried about it, as I believe there will be a rookie pay scale coming soon according to slot.

but no one has a problem with what Al Davis gives to all of his players?

Like making tommy kelly one of the highest paid pieces of shit on a football team?

But its Al Davis, no one dares to speak bad about al davis.... what happened to the "what have you done for me lately?" NFL.... fucking pussies.

How about DRob and Gholston were fuckups? Its that plain and simple.

i dont think they are saying it matters what the player does. when a team goes out and upsets the pay scale for a draft position it costs them all money. the next year the guy drafted in that slot will use that to his advantage in negotiations. just like the guy drafted behind will use the number before to help him get more.

its retarded because they are basically saying that the jets should be a part of the collusion that they are doing.

but its retarded for the jets to pay more than market value. essentially the jets by signing rookies for more than they are worth are making everyones tickets more expensive, everyones directv more expensive so on and so forth.

its all douchebaggery on all sides.

Are you kidding me, what does it matter if you pay him now or later.

These contracts are not guaranteed like other sports and not only that but these kids are expected to play and make an impact ASAP so why not get paid ASAP, unlike baseball where you might pay a player huge sums of money and not see him in the majors for 4 years.....jibberish a bunch of jibberish.

Besides the fact that who gives a damn what other front offices supposedly think, this is also complete BS, particularly in 2008. Here are the contracts for the first round draft choices in 2008:

Pk Player Pos. Team Status Contract
    1. Jake Long OT Miami Signed 5 years, $57.5 million ($30M guaranteed)
    2. Chris Long DE St. Louis Signed 6 years, $56.5 million ($29M guaranteed)

    4. Darren McFadden RB Oakland Signed 6 years, $60 million ($26M guaranteed)
    5. Glenn Dorsey DT Kansas City Signed 5 years, $51 million ($23M guaranteed)
    6. Vernon Gholston DE N.Y. Jets Signed 5 years, $50 million ($21M guaranteed)
    7. Sedrick Ellis DT New Orleans Signed 5 years, $49 million ($19.5M guaranteed)
    8. Derrick Harvey DE Jacksonville Signed 5 years, $33.4 million ($17.177M guaranteed)
    9. Keith Rivers LB Cincinnati Signed 6 years, $23 million ($15.6M guaranteed)
    10. Jerod Mayo LB New England Signed 5 years, $18.9 million ($13.8M guaranteed)
    11. Leodis McKelvin CB Buffalo Signed 5 years, $19.4 million ($12.6M guaranteed)

    14. Chris Williams OT Chicago Signed 5 years, $16 million ($10M guaranteed)
    15. Branden Albert OG Kansas City Signed 5 years, $15.8 million ($9.2M guaranteed)

    17. Gosder Cherilus OT Detroit Signed 5 years, $15 million ($8.9M guaranteed)
    18. Joe Flacco QB Baltimore Signed 5 years, $30 million ($8.75M guaranteed)
    19. Jeff Otah OT Carolina Signed 5 years, $14.4 million ($8.965M guaranteed)
    20. Aqib Talib CB Tampa Bay Signed 5 years, $14 million ($8.2M guaranteed)
    21. Sam Baker OT Atlanta Signed 5 years, $13.5 million ($7.8M guaranteed)
    22. Felix Jones RB Dallas Signed 5 years, $10.5 million ($8M guaranteed)
    23. Rashard Mendenhall RB Pittsburgh Signed 5 years, $12.555 million ($7.125M guaranteed)
    24. Chris Johnson RB Tennessee Signed 5 years, $12 million ($7M guaranteed)
    25. Mike Jenkins CB Dallas Signed 5 yaers, $9.7 million ($7M guaranteed)
    26. Duane Brown OT Houston Signed 5 years, $11.4 million ($6.5M guaranteed)
    27. Antoine Cason CB San Diego Signed 5 years, $12.03 million
    28. Lawrence Jackson DE Seattle Signed 5 years, $11.25 million ($6.1M guaranteed)
    29. Kentwan Balmer DE San Francisco Signed 5 years, $11.5 million ($6M guaranteed)
    30. Dustin Keller TE N.Y. Jets Signed 5 years, $12 million ($6M guaranteed)
    31. Kenny Phillips FS N.Y. Giants Signed 5 years, $11.15 million

    Note in particular

    4. Darren McFadden RB Oakland Signed 6 years, $60 million ($26M guaranteed)
    5. Glenn Dorsey DT Kansas City Signed 5 years, $51 million ($23M guaranteed)
    6. Vernon Gholston DE N.Y. Jets Signed 5 years, $50 million ($21M guaranteed)
    7. Sedrick Ellis DT New Orleans Signed 5 years, $49 million ($19.5M guaranteed)

How exactly is Gholston's contract over slot? The total value is precisely between the numbers 5 and 7 picks, as is the guaranteed money. Clearly it was Atlanta that went way over slot in their contract with Ryan, so why aren't people complaining about that? Could it be because he played so well as a rookie?

The problem is not what the Jets paid Gholston as the #6 pick; it's that he shouldn't have been the #6 pick, a very different point.

Edit: The situation for Revis is also not as unusual as it seems. His contract guarantees $11 million, while those just before and after him guarantee $9.4 million and $8 million, so they went about $2.5 million too high; the reason is that they got him for an extra year if they want and avoided having to franchise him as a result.

QB makes more than others so slot doesn't apply in the same way.

well what kind of goes around comes around. it means the jets will have to eventually overpay for their draft picks as well, because of the overslot.

it's really the nfl's problem. they need a rookie cap.

the revis one is horseshit for the most part. revis was the last holdout before jamarcus, so people bitching about that one must be referring to how much they pay 2008 and 2009 rookies. however, revis playing like he has means the contract was more than justified.

You have to remember the timing in order to see what happened. McFadden signed early in June, with a contract that gave him $10 million per season and guaranteed him a little over 4 million for each year of the contract. Gholston was actually the NEXT one to sign. While Dorsey and Ellis were involved in contract disputes, Gholston signed his deal on July 25th for the same amount per season and essentially the same amount guaranteed over the years of the contract. He never should have made that much with where he was slotted, but the team wanted to get him into camp. That forced Kansas City's hand, and they had to agree to a contract worth that extra million over Gholston's. Dorsey got a contract worth more per season than McFadden's, with the ability to hit free agency a year sooner, and it only cost the team an extra $3 million in guarantees. The proximity of those two contracts was a plus for the Ellis team in negotiations.

The fact that Gholston signed his contract forced the close contracts that you see for the other two. It also accounted for the huge discrepancy in contract numbers for Ellis and Harvey (at #8). If you look at this year's contracts, the drop offs are a lot steeper in that range (with the exception of the Sanchez contract, since QB contracts run higher). Andre Smith's contract is an aberration, given that they traded years and guarantees for a lower per season average. However, compare the above to:

    4. Seattle - LB, Aaron Curry, Wake Forest - Signed (6-years, $60M; $34M guaranteed)
    5. NY Jets (fr. CLE) - QB, Mark Sanchez, USC - Signed (5-years; $50.5M real/$60M max; $28M guaranteed)
    6. Cincinnati - OT, Andre Smith, Alabama - Signed (4-years, $26M; $21M guaranteed)
    7. Oakland - WR, Darrius Heyward-Bey, Maryland - Signed (5-years, $38.25M real/$54M max; $23.5M guaranteed)
    8. Jacksonville - OT, Eugene Monroe, Virginia - Signed (5-years, $35.4M; $19.2M guaranteed)

Much more of a steady drop between numbers.

this makes sense. the only problem is we really have nothing to do with contracts dished out in 2009. QB's are generally perceived as 'exceptions to the rule.' sanchez was the 2nd person to sign, and since stafford had his contract signed before the draft, Dirty's fate had pretty much been sealed. so IMO, we're off the hook in terms of FO's bitching at us for overslotting.

Sanchez's contract wasn't the complaint that other FOs had, just as Ryan's contract wasn't the complaint last year. 2009 was used above as a reference. I remember the situation last year, when Gholston's contract pissed off the Chiefs and Saints. Whether they had reason to be upset is up for debate, but it did impact their negotiations last year.

Did you read it? I even said in the above post that QB contracts generally run higher.
