This one I really don't get. Why would we want him? As the article says he has been hurt on and off for three years. I'm sure he is cheap but he still takes up a roster spot.

Maybe this was the more important part of the article.

Notes: The Jets aren't ruling out keeping NT Dewayne Robertson and moving him to defensive end after a deal with the Broncos fell through last week. Robertson, who has a $9.8 million base salary this season and a $3 million roster bonus due in June, would have to rework his contract. The Broncos, however, are still interested, as are the Lions.... CB Donald Strickland (49ers) remains on the Jets radar, as does veteran Ty Law.

I remember the 2000 draft when everyone was chanting "We want Franks!" when our picks came up. We took Shaun Ellis and John Abraham instead. We ended up with Becht instead. I still cannot believe that was 8 years ago. I'd be okay with bringing in Franks. He's a guy that can be a nice target inside the 5 and on any 3rd and short situation. I cannot seem him taking the starting spot over Baker though.

i thought we were looking for a good-great blocking tightend, and not a broken down TE who has semi-decent hands these days, and semi-decent blocking skills.

As long as the contract is loaded with incentives it's worth the risk with our spaghetti armed QB

If hes signed to be a backup and paid like a backup that's fine.

I'd like to see Baker get an extension and the two announced at the same time, if he signs.

Franks was bumped from the roster because of his injury prone body and Donald Lee. Lee came in thinking he was just a temporary fix on the Franks situation and began putting up great numbers as Favre's dump-off guy. This yielded me a TON of fantasy points in my league last season, so much so that I benched Ben Watson for him.

Franks wouldn't be a bad addition and would merely provide depth at the TE position. He wouldn't be a starter but can still be a threat in a two-TE formation.

If Franks can provide solid inline blocking on short yardage and goal line situations he will be a nice addition. I don't know how good he is as a blocker.

But look at our short yardage blocking last season and focus on the tight end. Time and time again Baker and all the others were getting no leverage and were pushed right into the hole where the runner was headed. net result - the runs were stuffed. We need a TE who can hold up in those areas.

Moral of the story: Never, EVER take TE in round 1.

(Ok, Shockey and Miller are exceptions, but for every Shockeys, there are at least 3 or 4 Johnny Mitchells and Anthony Bechts, so roll the dice at your own risk.)

Franks is a good signing. Increases our offensive depth, when we currently have almost none. Cheap signings, allows us to allocate the real money remaining to the DBs and the draft.

its true te are a risk in the first, but i think if you take one LATE like olsen at 31 last year, they can become decent picks. I think we know how Kyle Brady worked out and im starting to think Vernon Davis probly was a mistake, but Kellen Winslow was looking to be like a bust after his two years but now hes looks like a good te.

Kellen Winslow Jr. is probably going to end up better than both of those guys.

Winslow...Olsen...Shockey...even Vernon Davis hasn't looked like a bust when he's been on the field.

If you get stuck in absolutes like that you're going to miss out on some pretty damn good talent....

Jets agreed to terms with TE Bubba Franks, formerly of the Packers.

Franks, 30, caught 18 passes for 132 yards (7.2 YPC) and three TDs in 2007 as Donald Lee's backup. He's slowed down quite a bit, but can still help in the run game. Franks will be the Jets' No. 2 tight end behind Chris Baker.

Quoted for being the most coherent Champ post ever.
