I hope this doesn't get me banned, but I just don't get it.

Chance are he will end up somewhere and get his $18M bonus. But it will be spread over two years. So essentially he will make $10M guaranteed this year and $8M next year. That is not so much different than what the Jets are offering him now. I just don't get it.

In fact, it looks to me like in the long run, he would be better off playing one more year under the franchise tag and then move on.

If the bonus is spread over two years is the second year Guaranteed? I thought if a player was cut they could avoid the second year bonus. Kinda like we threatened to do with Chad and his roster bonus.

Bonus money is guaranteed... chances are it won't be spread out over 2 years but over 5 or so years (3-4mil/year). If you cut a player, the ALL of the remaining bonus gets paid the next year. A franchise tag is essentially a 1 year contract of about 8mil (for a DE). A career ending injury (or a severe decline in performance) means he will only get 8 mil rather than all 18mil he would get if he got a long term deal. This is why everybody hates being franchised.
