i have seen this message a hundred times over the last 2 days, i ask why if its only preseason do so many people feel the need to come in here and remind us in every thread? if its so unimportant why do you even bother coming to the message board? seriously we all realize its only preseason we dont need the all knowing masters of perception to remiind us of it in every thread.
We all know it, but everybody who's going OMG BRETT RATLIFF IS THE NEXT JOE MONTANA needs to cool it a little.
I don't know, maybe because people have raging hard ons for guys who were playing against Cleveland's 2nd and 3rd string defense. I mean, this was the same team who gave up almost 500 yards passing to Cincy and Palmer last year...and those were their starters. I'm not saying they won't be good, but I just don't think it's prudent to look TOO much into 1 pre-season game.
Because Jet fans are used to failure, and have developed a loser mentality. rather than acknowedge that a backup QB "looked good" in the first pre-season game, people have to impose their defense mechanisms because they are not used to seeing good things happen. Judging from the number of views of TC reports, it is fair to say that most people ARE interested in knowing how guys are doing in camp. A pre-season game is a step up in competition from that. No, it isnt the regular season, it is what it is. And it's still better for a guy to have a good performance than a bad one. The final score of a pre-season game isn't important, but individuals and units performing well is a good thing.
Another thing, I don't see anybody saying VC is a complete flop because he didn't do much in the Cleveland game. Like someone else said, a lot of us get excited so easily because over the years, there hasn't been all that much to get excited about.
Football = Fun! Man, that is HARSH! And just plain wrong (esp. when it comes to newbie fans), since the Jets have had a decent record and been in the playoffs most of the last 10 years or so. So you might even say the opposite, that Jets fans are spoiled by their success, and are not used to losing. But those of us who have followed th team through the 1980s and early 1990s (esp. the Kotite regime) do deserve to be cynical. I'd like to point out that a lot of this preseason prognostication is due to the fact that a lot of rabid football fans (esp. JETS fans) are chomping at the bit for the new season to start! So we overstate the importance of every single play in an exhibition game, anoint saviors, look for future stars, look for scapegoats etc. Nothing wrong with that. As long as we remember it's just the preseason. Hey, you all (especially my tight-ass critics): Isn't football supposed to be FUN?
i agree, the lowery will start by week 4 and ratliff is the best in the world stuff is annoying but there are alot of posts out there that are legitimate posts, not rah rah or super negative. i have posted a couple myself where i purposely stated we will have to see what happens over the next couple of weeks i purposely put alot of emphasis on the fact we need to see how they perform and improve or prove themselves. and i have to come back and see things like relax and its only the first week of preseason. blah blah blah. its just a pet peeve of mine and really gets me fired up because i happen to be interested in the situations going on in the first week. seeing where guys are as far as development personally and in their units interests me. i want to see how they improve, or fall back on a weekly basis. to sit here and not pay attention would be foolish and create me coming on here in week 1 and saying 'why isnt gholston starting and playing all downs at olb' sorry guys for the off topic post but i had to vent a little.
CO-SIGN. Why can't people understand that we are just starving for Jets football (especially in light of all the excitement regarding Favre and the rest of the Offseason additions) and will take anything we can get??? Also, I believe that although preseason is not a great indicator of the regular season (something people on this board love to point out to no end), it is still a CRUCIAL part of the season- Especially for a team who adds as many new pieces as the jets have added this offseason. Football is the ultimate team sport. There are 11 players on the field from each team at any give time (more than basketball, hockey, and baseball), and therefore, the success of a given team depends much more on team chemistry than any other of the major sports. Thus, Preseason, which is the best opportunity for a team to build team chemistry, is absolutely vital to a team expecting to compete during the regular season. We all know it's "only preseason". We don't need to hear that 1 out of every 5 posts. Thanks.
The reason is that for a lot of us there is no difference between a pre-season game, a Madden contest, a Fantasy Football card trading party, and a regular season game. All of it is on some screen or other, and WTF! it's supposed to entertain me!!! I get it.
