Think about it ...........how important is it to have a premier speed pass rusher like JAbe? The Patriots haven't had one, the Steelers haven't had one. Now they both have a good team pass rush, coming from different positions on the field. It really is more about in today's game coaching and schemes. We hopefully have a coach who is not a "motivator" like Herm but an X's and O's coach who could give a shit about the media or how his players "feel". Hopefully the schemes we employ will free up pass rushers like you see happen with other good scheming defenses. I am thrilled Herm is gone and the looseness of his regime hopefully is over and good riddance to the "turd" JAbe who you never really felt was in it for the title, the glory or the team. Rejoice Jet fans in the hopes we will be turning into a football "team!" Your thoughts?
First thought: never use the word "dummy" in a thread where it can be interpretted as directed toward the forum. There is a wealth of very intelligent posters who reside here and this will only serve to get things off on the wrong foot. Some of our cream of the crop posters are sort of hanging on the sidelines right now, but they will be back soon enough.
You must be of a younger generation............it's an old phrase used for years to make a point......not even close to an insult but I get your point.
One of the main benefits of the 3-4 as I see it is that your pass rush can come from anywhere, you don't always have to wait for your one pass-rushing end to do it.
Actually, I have been a Jet fan since 67. I certainly did not want to come across as pontificating in my response, but I just see many times, how things get interpretted the wrong way and then the flamathon starts. In answer to you original post. Most have been elated with the hiring of Mangini and the move to bring Tannenbaum up to the GM level. It was a risky move by Woody, but so far the crew has displayed that they know what they are doing. Much has to be evaluated yet, but no complaints so far. I look forward to more of your posts.
The Patriots have won SB precisely because they have had one of the most physically dominating front 7 in football. At the point of attack on D the Pats have 3 dynamic pass rushers that were the focal point of the great defenses they put together to win SB. The Pats have had a top 3 physically dominating front 7 every year the won a SB. In 03 they had two players in the top 25 in sacks, Vrabel with 9.5 and Seymour with 8.0 and they ranked 6 in the league in sacks. In 05 McGinist had 9.5 Sacks the Pats ranked 5 in the league in sacks. In 06 when Seymour missed a ton of action the Pats ranking in sacks fell to 23rd in the league and they struggled all year to secure a playoff birth. If you think Vrable, Seymour and McGinist aren't big time pass rushers, you don't have a clue. Dominating players at the point of attack including great pass rushers like the Pats have had during their SB run is the reason they have had the best teams. The idea that scheme with average Joe's is going to win in the NFL is nonsense. The Pats have dominated because they have great coaching and great players.
The motivator and Donnie Henderson produced the 12th ranked defense in the NFL last year..... The 'X''s and 'O's schemer produced the 26th ranked defense in the NFL last year and the 31st ranked pass defense. Mangini may not give a **** about the media and players, apparently he doesn't give a **** about 'X's and 'O's either since the Patriots had better players than the Jets on defense and produced poorer results. http://www.nfl.com/stats/teamsort/NFL/DEF-TOTAL/2005/regular?sort_col_1=4
Last year the Pats did not have better personal on D than the Jets. That's why they had a year as good as any year Herm every had but a sub par Pats year.
I could not agree more with your post. It is all aoubt coaching, synnergy, and getting the most from your players. I never thought the Pats had the best talent. The just used what they had better than anyone else.
When you look at the fact that they put a defense on the field with 1st rounders (Abraham, Ellis, Robertson, Vilma) and expensive free agents and couldn't stop the run, giving up way too many points (people tend to overlook their poor defensive performance with all their offensive problems last year) is the surest sign that this organization needed a drastic change. It seems to me that they have a plan and give some reason for hope.
I'm pretty sure that Seymour, Willie McGinest, Joey Porter, Clark Haggans and Aaron Smith are all solid pass rushers. With that being said their coaching staffs create oppurtunities for them to get pressure on the qb.
OK, so who is going to be the Jets pass rushing demon this year? Ellis? (Is this an odd or even year?) Thomas? (I keep hoping) Kimo, Barton or Hobson? I'm not an Abe fan, the front seven looks pretty toothless right now.
This statistic is grossly misleading. If anyone looked at our 12th ranking and said gees, these guys are good, then they are sadly mistaken. While surprizingly, we were not too bad against the pass, we flat out sucked against the run #29th. In attempted 4th down conversions opposing teams were successful, I think 14 out of 17 times; a whopping 81%. In third down conversions the opposition was successful about 41% of the time. This also was bad. It translates to drives continuing when they should have been stopped. Couple into this the fact that our penalty yards against us went way up last year and we have a real problem on our hands. Granted fatigue may have been a factor in some of this at times, but I can't excuse this either since if you average the entire season together, the opposition controlled the ball for a litlle over 33 minutes. Like I said, statistics can be very misleading. We clearly had to make some changes on how we go about doing things defensively, and we are now in the process of doing just that.
Been at work all day since my last post on this thread that I started this morning. Thanks Hornet..........I was born in 67!!
Biggs, Would you call any of those three good(Vrabel), very good(McGinest) and great (Seymour) players "premier speed pass rushers"? I wouldn't and I am not suggesting that the Jets will play great defense with average Joe's. What I am saying is that coaching and schemes with good and very good players is what I prefer over a one dimensional player. I agree with you that there front seven is great but they do it without the speed rusher. You can say Colvin but I think he is more of a linebacker than down lineman. Again my point is that the JAbes of the world value is overrated.
Can you believe that that 12th ranked defense were 1 yard away from winning a game all by themselves? 1 friggin yard.
