I started looking at the cap pages and noticed immediately that the Jets will be approximately 19 million over the anticipated cap next year of just under 121 million dollars. To make it worse there are only 37 players listed making up that amount. http://www.nyjetscap.com/salary13.html This doesn't include the following players who are either already gone or will be free agents at the end of this year. Yeremiah Bell Safety Jeff Cumberland Tackle Mike DeVito Defensive End Shonn Greene Running Back Austin Howard Tackle Eddie Jones Linebacker Dustin Keller Tight End Mat Kroul Center Dennis Landolt Guard LaRon Landry Safety Tarren Lloyd Tight End Aaron Maybin Defensive End Brandon Moore Guard Julian Posey Cornerback Tanner Purdum Cornerback Eron Riley Wide Receiver Chaz Schilens Wide Receiver Mat Slauson Guard Bryan Thomas Linebacker Devon Torrence Cornerback Isaiah Trufant Cornerback Patrick Turner Wide Receiver Granted we will probably cut a bunch of people to get where we need to be but do we have any realistic chance of fielding a truly competitive team next year or will we be in a complete rebuilding mode for years to come?
Can't say. The jury is still out on McKnight, Hill, Kerley, Sanchez and Greene. The left side of the OL should be solid, the right side will probably need work and that can be done next offseason. This year will tell us if we're going down the tubes or not. Can't make that verdict now. If the aforementioned guys have good seasons things will look drastically different. Defensively we're fine everywhere but LB age-wise. We're not fucked cap-wise either.
4 players being cut will make that entire 19 million go away and then some. Calvin Pace, Bart Scott, Eric Smith, and the man formally Wayne Hunter and is now Jason Smith. When all 4 of them are cut (and make no mistake they all will be) we will have 3 million in cap room, plus whatever rolls over from this year. Plus several other guys could be moved if feel they aren't working out (Holmes, Tebow, Devito are just a few that come to mind) freeing up a ton more space. So while its not a ton of money, there is money in the budget to help improve our squad a year from now. Most of it depends on the continued development of the guys we drafted over the past 4 years. We need them to become better players.
I don't think that the Jets window is closing just yet, because the key players on the defense are either in their prime or younger. And, as long as Rex Ryan coaches the Jets, they will go as far as the defense carries them. That said, the Jets' chances of seriously competing rely entirely on what kind of QB Mark Sanchez becomes.
Bingo. If Sanchez is Top 5 Pick caliber, the Jets window is just opening, if he isn't, then it will be another 5 years.
That and the weapons they can put around him. Right now the weapons have decreased steadily over the past two years. Next offseason, we could be moving on from DK, and don't exactly have a replacement in the wings. That said the staff is praying Cumberland can become DK, but for significantly cheaper. It's not going to happen, but they are praying it will.
+1 to this. If Sanchez can take that next step, we should be alright barring any huge injuries or major losses to free agency (in the coming years).
I agree with the consensus - QB >>>>>>>>> every other position We will go only so far as Sanchez develops, otherwise we are back to the drawing board.
Most likely, yes, unless a lot of the young players added this and next year step up BIG time in 2013. A lot of veterans will have to be moved.
Chance for what? We don't play in a vacuum. Can you honestly compare the Jets against the top 5 teams in the league and honestly say we are better or at least their equal? Look we have a below average offense (and that's being charitable) and an above average defense. Add to that the cap, bad drafts... Looks like we will be in a holding pattern for the next few years.
My best guess is that the Jets are already at the start of the next window but having trouble getting it to open up. They're clearly not still in the 2008 to 2010 window at this point. That's gone. It left town with Jones, Faneca and Jenkins in 2010. Losing Edwards, Cotchery, Woody and Ellis in 2011 was just the exclamation point. The 2012 Jets have only lost a couple of real contributors from 2010-2011, in LT and Leonhard. They've actually replaced Leonhard with better but the overall talent on the team is much lower than it was in 2009 and 2010 so it just doesn't matter. If Sanchez is done here the Jets will be rebuilding for a few years. They're still going to be getting middling draft picks in 2012 and probably 2013 is the cliff season and the real start of rebuilding.
Not many players i give a shit about besides Landry, Howard maybe depending on preformance, same goes for Maybin, Slauson/Moore, Greene, IMO Keller is gone the past reinforces my statememnt with the suffling of Sanchez's weapons year after year, Depends on next years draft Thomas and More SHOULD be replaced. Will they tho is a huge fucking question mark
There's so many mouths to feed that we're going to have to get rid of some guys. Some may restructure, but some feel their product on the field warrants a larger paycheck. If Tanny can get a couple trades for some first, second, and third round picks, why not?
I agree, those are the four that stand out for immediate cuts but then you have enough money for the 33 players left on the cap list. You still need to come up with money to pay 20 more so you can fill out the roster. Among those positions you have to fill is 2 starting safeties, a starting RB, a starting tackle, a starting tight end and a few starting LBs. Oh, and Revis will probably be holding out for a raise. Let's see our Capologist work his magic this time....
If Austin Howard is even average, he will be our starting RT next year. Making absolutely peanuts I might add. I doubt he even breaks $850K on a deal if he gets one next year. Our starting RB might be Powell if he continues to develop at the rate he did this offseason. If not, I'm sure we will just draft another one... Starting TE, I said in another thread, the Jets said it the second they got him as a UDFA, Jeff Cumberland is DK-Lite. I personally think he isn't even half of DK-Lite on his best day. But the Jets think he can be that guy, and if he develops into it this year, DK will walk and Cumberland steps in as a starter making peanuts. If not, the Jets will try and wrap up DK before FA starts for a reasonably cheap deal, if they can't he will walk and we will look to sign a blocking only TE, as they fit Sparano's system better, and probably not-so-coincidentally make significantly less money. Depending on Bell's play, he could be brought back for one more year. I think a big reason the Jets are being accused on penny-pinching with final cuts is because they made an internal decision already to try and resign Landry to a long term deal after the season. They feel he is truly healthy, and every Jets fan has seen how big an impact he has had on this defense already in the preseason. So they know they will probably have to give him a long-term deal, so they definitely are trying to save up funds to make it happen. A secondary solution to give them more time to negotiate a deal if need be is the franchise tag if Landry truly stays healthy. Also we did just draft Bush this summer, he may develop into more than just a 3rd rotational safety. Even with that though, barring some crazy emergence from Bush, I fully expect Safety to be a 1st or 2nd round target in the draft. As for Revis, he won't be going to camp next year on his current contract. The jets don't want him to play the last year of his deal. A new deal will be struck, the question isn't if, it's when. The second question of course is how expensive will it be cap-wise. Oh and you forgot one other position. RG, Brandon Moore's deal is up and I fully expect him to be done in NY after this year unless he comes back as a depth guy. Vlad's actual improvement is so impressive to me, I fully expect that he can come in and take over for Moore next season. But like I said, it's not really as bad as it seems. Cromartie and Holmes both are tradeable after this season. If either guys play falters or their attitudes get out of line, they could be moved to save us some decent money, and net us a useful mid-round pick or higher in the process. I prefer they just stick around, but if problems are there, next year there is an out. as for the bolded, check this link: http://nyjetscap.com/salary.html the bottom 20 on the roster, are making basically nothing. There is almost nothing to worry about there. Yes you have to budget a few million for that entire 20, but thats always somewhat in reserve for us with capologist Tanny at the helm. Like I said, in order for it to work, we need those draft picks to step up and be starters for us. If that happens, then we won't have to go spend in FA to be successful. If they don't we probably will have to roll with them for a year, while we draft their replacements.
Ultimately it nearly all boils down to the QB position. if you have a top QB you pretty much are competitive for a 5+ year stretch regardless of everything else and if you dont have a good QB you are unlikely to be competitive unless everything else is golden (which is not sustainable).
The problem here is the FO/CS never seem to give Sanchez the opportunity to succeed. The don't surround him with quality receivers and give him consistency at that position. Bringing in Tebow is another slap in his face, even though Tebow should NEVER be the QB of this or ANY team, but the moronic Tebowmaniacs could make unwanted controversy. Not to mention the media. I think Sanchez has been handled all wrong by this organization from the get go and unfortunately I don't see things changing anytime soon.
The league minimum next year for 1 year players is $480k and $555 for 2 year. So even if they fill the entire remaining roster with players like that it will cost another 10 million after just barely getting under the cap for the first 33 and that doesn't take into account all the starters we will lose to FA. I don't mind getting younger but I just don't see how we will be a force. NE has done it for years with nothing much more than Brady but we don't have that kind of QB anywhere on the horizon.
I honestly don't see Revis coming back for the money he wants, and still remain competitive in the league. Yes he is probably worth the money, but we have too many other needs on the team to keep him. The defense as a whole is eating up too much cap. The defense would take a hit, but we could sign 3 pretty solid players for the money Revis wants. Of course if mark doesn't play better, nothing else matters.
