IS THIS MANGINI'S LAST NFL JOB?

As the dust continues to settle regarding last week's storm of controversy regarding the Patriots spying scandal, more and more folks in league circles are talking about the strong possibility that Jets coach Eric Mangini will find it very difficult to be hired by any other NFL team.

Selena Roberts of the New York Times addressed this point on Tuesday, and we've heard similar thoughts from multiple league insiders.

As a matter of principle, Mangini has violated the code of silence. As a matter of practicality, Mangini has shown that he cannot be trusted.

If, as plenty of league insiders privately will acknowledge, there are many tactics utilized by teams that violate one or more league rules, who would ever trust Mangini with the state secrets if he'll be willing to blow the whistle after he leaves?

The reality, however, is that Mangini has likely learned his lesson, and that he knows that he has pulled the trigger on a one-shot pistol. But this doesn't change the fact that no NFL executive could justify taking the risk that Mangini might offer up a sequel.

Meanwhile, Mangini might have problems keeping the job he currently has. As one league insider opined on Tuesday:

"The biggest issue that Mangini faces is that his team absolutely stinks. One of the problems with being a surprise team is that you can't surprise anyone anymore. They won't win more than six games this year. The Ravens tried to hand the game to the Jets after dominating for three quarters and the Jets refused to take it. The offensive line is awful, the defensive line is terrible, the running back is old, the wideouts drop passes, and the secondary is beat up. The Patriots will win that division by five or six games, easy. That, more than anything, is going to put heat on Mangini."

So it could be that Mangini will eventually have to seek refuge in the college game. If, that is, he can find a program that has no secrets that it would rather not have the NCAA find out about.

Well, maybe the UFL will be hiring.

    What do you think?

He told the truth. I don't think anything's wrong with that. From the looks of things, Belichick's been cheating for a long time...everyone needed to know about it.

Sounds like the wishful thinkings of a bitter Pats fan... there's plenty of teams around the league who applauded the outing of the Pats... could be the victim of the old boys network as well

If he goes 4 – 12 in the next two seasons like his mentor – then yes, it might be his last job. Because Mangini more than likely isn’t going to have the luck of getting the (or one of) greatest quarterback of all time.

If Herm had Brady when he was the jets coach, Brady (not Herm just like not Belly) would have won three superbowls.

Uh oh...Brian Billick ratted us out! His career is over in the NFL. He's lost all respect.

This is just dumb. I don't see how Mangini can be blamed for this situation. Belichick was threatening the entire integrity of the League by taping opposing sidelines and something needed to be done about it.

Well, other GMs may not want to hire him but other owners certainly would. It's the owners and not the GMs that have the most to lose if the NFL goes straight down hill like the NBA has because of integrity problems. Their golden goose is already in jeopardy. This would have eventually been disclosed anyway. Privately other teams had been complaining to the league for years about the Patriots. The only difference was they didn't have the proof. The Jets did.

The article has some merit to it, but the "league insider" is clearly negative towards him and/or the Jets.

Retarded article. He blew the whistle because there was cheating going on. Last time I checked that was a good thing. If other NFL teams are cheating, Mangini most likely won't want to work for them anyway.

theres a few things about the article...

the first thing is that mangini will get another chance to coach in the nfl...more so than romeo crennell...i think the whole "state secret" thing is kind of ridiculous. if there are a large number of teams doing something that is blatently cheating, and they have to fire their coach, then there was not only something wrong there on a talent and ability to win level, but an ethical one. i would think that an organization would want to bring someone in that does things by the book, the right way.

im not an nfl insider, so who knows what to think especially when it comes to the mindset of football execs...

even though this season is a disaster, and there have been some mistakes made as far as upgrading the OL and DL, mangini isnt going anywhere, and hes hardly on a warm seat, let alone the hot seat. sean peyton and mangini will return for a third campaign despite anything that happens this year. scott linehan? hes on fire right now. hell be gone by seasons end without some kind of miraculous turnaround. kind of impossible seeing as when pace goes down, so do the rams chances of hitting the end zone.

in the 2 years EM has been the HC off the NYJ along with tanny, they have had solid drafts. look how many players from their 2 drafts are not only on the field, but making an impact.

the first major mistake by this regime is the pete kendall fiasco. this should have been handled much better, and quietly taken care of. they look like hypocrites at this point by giving moore a raise when he walked out of a practice as protest, meanwhile kendall did any and everything asked of him. its also amazing that thomas jones went from being a steal to being old after 2 games running behind a much less talented line. crazy thinkers these "insiders" are...

hopefully this offseason the FO will take a leading role in free agnecy and through the draft (where theyve shined) turn around both lines while adding more guys with impact and more guys who are role players.

these are good times to be a jets fan. the team is 0-2, and its an ugly 0-2, but the future is bright. we have a blossoming young HC, a bright, wide eyed OC, the best ST coach in the league, and sutton has been doing a decent job with the defense, given that the scheme was dictated by the coach and it is his job to implement. hopefully after this season the jets will do 1 of 2 things on defense....go head first into the 3-4 and bring in players for the scheme that fit it physically as well as mentally, or they change to a 4-3 base to take advantage of the personnell.

If the team falters this year, and say the next 2, then you know what, it may be. If the team makes the playoffs 2 of the next 3 yrs, and then he leaves, he'll get another job in a heartbeat.

The biggest problem this FO has made, well there are 2, is not spending the money they had on free agents and holding everybody to the standard of a choir boy. People make mistakes, sure, but most of them get over it. Certainly there are truly bad people you wouldn't want under any circumstances and then there are those who may have made a mistake in their past but have since grown up.

Two perfect examples of that are Parcells bringing in Bryan Cox who had more baggage then your local airport. He was a warrior for the Jets. The other is Moss who we could have easily had and by all accounts he has been nothing but a model citizen in NE.

I'm still not convinced Mangini "ratted" Belichick out. I think this is nothing more than speculation that he did because he worked for Belichick. I actually think that the Pats got caught because they wouldn't surrender the tape which then caused the local authorities to get involved which then caused the NFL to be involved.

Some people just want to spin this and make it about Mangini, as though Belichick is somehow the injured party!

The whole piece was just filled with anti-Jets bile. Whoever wrote it should wonder about whether they will ever get another job, writing stuff like 'opined'.

    Clown.
