Len Pasquarelli, in his Tip Sheet Notes mentioned this little gem: Is this just yet another blow-out-of-proportion off season story or is it legit? And, assuming it's legit, is it a problem?
Yeah, its legit. Didn't you realise how much smaller he looked last season? If he could have put the weight back on, I'm sure he would have. If hes not at 300 by training camp, I'd be a little worried. He's not a great run blocker, i think mostly because of his weight
Does he really need to be 300+ to be an outstanding LT? I don't think so. Especially with the speed rushers in the league today
I would say its not a problem to be under 300. But he is 6'6'', making him pretty lenky for a lineman.
If Jets "officials" are worried with it, I'd say it's a legit concern. My question is, where did this come from? I seem to remember this statement coming out right after the playoffs, is this old news or are they still talking about it?
I believe that is alittle older. It's a bit of a concern, however, Brick is gonna get better just by improving technique and knowing how to defend certain moves and such. As for the weight, there are so many different techniques, the team will find something that works for him whether it be a nutritionist, specific weight training, etc..
Sure, he can take speed rushers. It's not the pass blocking that we should be so worried about. Run blocking NEEDS weight. And thats where we are lacking on the line.
I can only remmember like two or three times someone ran right by Brick . I think he will be fine, Like kurt said "technique" and experience will serve him well. You just know they are working like crazy to improve the run game for this year. Maybe he's having difficulties (If reported or seen at mini camps) but its early. 1st Play from scrimmage this year jones up the gut for 28 yards!
There's weight and then there's weight. I don't think weight born of jelly donuts, Big Macs and fried dumplings is necessarily a good thing. The weight that comes from extra muscle is what he needs--I think he needs to be STRONGER to improve in run blocking, not merely heavier if it's just fat and hurts stamina.
Brick was artificially overweight for last year's scouting combine. This was probably achieved by following a strict doughnut diet for several weeks in order to overinflate his measurables for the scouts. Chances are he'll never be 315 pounds of muscle. Face it, he's really a LT in a TEs body. He's just not a huge dude (relatively speaking, of course). His frame is actually rather lean. Looking at him, I'd say its a miracle he's even 290. Now, is this a problem? Somewhat... but after a solid rookie campaign, you have to figure he will learn and continue to get better, even if he is only 290.
At some point, when he gets a little older, he will be able to keep that weight on. For now though, I do agre that it is a concern. he struggled agauinst power rushers last year, and technique can help that, but only to an extent. I also question his work ethic. I saw him in an interview after the season say that he was just gonan relax and not do any crazy workout schedules or anything....to me thats not a hunger to be the best...
Almost any 23 y.o. with access to that kind of Nutrition, and coaching should be able to pack on 15-20 labs of muscle during the offseason. THe only problem he should be haivng is keeping it on During the season. The "L" word is going to start making an appearence if this problem does not go away.
Disagree. D'Brick is redefining the LT position. Traditionally O linemen have been 'big old uglies'. Weight usually equates to slower as well. A fit technically sound LT sounds good to me. His pulling and downfield blocking were very good last year , his rookie year. Arguably this is the most difficult position along the line and whilst he wasn't perfect he had an admirable first year. I believe this story is off season hog wash. He will as he gets older put weight on naturally , but for now I'm happy the way he is. He is athletic and strong ,AND has an enormous wingspan which makes him formidable.
They had a new feature on him acouple weeks ago about how he spent the first couple weeks of the offseason: His idea of relaxing was going to visit/train w/ US solidiers in Arctic Alaska before their iraqi deployment. Apparently he was doing 10 mile runs in heavy snow w/ the troops. That isn't exactly upper body weight training (which is what he needs) but I wouldnt call what he did lazy at all
