The DT position spot in my opinion wasn't aggressively pursued in either Free Agency, or the Draft.

The Jets did sign Monsanto Pope, Drafted Titus Adams (in the 7th) but passed up on several DT candidates in FA and the draft.

Is it possible that Tangini doesn't perceive a critical need at the DT spot?

I would assume that the DT position will be pursued next season either through free agency or the draft. We are in the first stages of the rebuilding process, and everything cannot be taken care of at once.

They probably feel that they can get away with Robertson, Pouha, and Pope playing DT for this season.

The funny thing about your post is Pope and Adams aren't going to be playing NT unless it is an emergency. All signs point to Big Dewayne and Sione Pouha taking care of the middle.

im guessing he's gonna see how the DT position goes this season and if its good he'll keep it the way it is and if its bad he'll address the need next season.

If Mangini is true to his word and plans on using strategies that suit the personnel, then we probably won't be seeing a whole hell of a lot of 3-4 this year because there's no way you can effectively disguise the hole we have at NT (in my perception) in such a scheme.

By the way, my sig applies in this situation. Thanks, Tom.

Pouha, Robertson, and Alailefaleula will be competing for the starting NT job. Maybe rotating if there is no definite winner. Pope and Adams will play DE in the 3-4, they are perfect size for 34DE.

the steelers are super bowl champ. name one d-lineman who's dominate.

the playmakers in the 3-4 are the linebackers.

How about that Kimo von Oelhoffen fellow?
Actually Casey Hampton is one of the top DTs in the league and Aaron Smith is also considered a very good DE.

    so...bad example by you!

In a way I see what you are saying, but we so desparately need to figure out who can play what if our eventual goal is to move to the 3-4. So if Thomas can play OLB with some skill, then we are set, but if not we might be looking at our future first round draft pick. Same thing with Robertson/Pouha and Vilma. I think we all know Hobson is a bad fit.

I don't know... ask Bradjulina or Beniffer. What about Vaughniston?

  17. The 3-4 DE position is extremely solid for us. Pretty much every one of our D-lineman can play the position and all bring different strengths to the table.

We're also pretty solid in terms of the 4-3 up front. D rob and BT are both good at pushing the pocket and if Ellis can go back to his old form, he can be the pass rusher we need.

The problem position right now is the 3-4 NT. D rob is a potential match-up nightmare for centers..but does he have the mentality to play the 2 gap? Can he hold up? Time will tell on that..

Pouha is another X factor. He has all the skills to be a very good 3-4 NT. All he needed was some polish on his strength, initial quickness and technique. The problem is, he's already 27 years old...can he make that much of a development? If he can..he, combined w/ D rob..could be a devistating combo inside..but if he doesnt..it could get really ugly for our run D.

I don't think we can really blame the FO too much for this. We are team that has an awful lot of needs, and the 3-4 NT position is hard for any franchise to fill..nevermind one w/ all the needs we have had. Let's take a "wait and see" approach to the position and hope for a boom from D rob and Pouha. If not..we address It next offseason.

I'm not saying the 3-4 will be nonexistant, but while I see your point about getting the players into the scheme to see who can hold a jock between whistles, Mangini still apparently wants to be competitive regardless of rebuilding. I suppose this in itself will determine how true to his personal mission statement Mangini will remain.

It will be interesting to see, since I have little to no expectations for this season. As long as they have shown visible and consistent progress by game 17, no scheme they run will disappoint me. Except maybe a whole lot of Tampa Cover-2!

I see what you are saying. I think 99% of all football fans have no expectations for this season for the Jets, but Mangini and Tannenbaum have to make it seem like they are making strides and being competitive because they are under intense scrutiny due to their age and lack of experience. So I think it seems obvious to us all that the 4-3 is probably our best scheme right now. It also seems obvious that Mangini is more comfortable with the 3-4 scheme. Unfortunately we are probably going to get trampled on in that scheme like you pointed out.

    Quite a Catch-22 here...

Play for the future or play for the present?
