I'm reading the latest blog from Hutchinson, and I just keep getting more and more pissed as I go along; this seems to be bordering on Cannizzaro crap "journalism". It almost seems to me that he is getting ready to run Mangini out of town. Now I haven't had my morning coffee yet so maybe I'm just a bit sensitive right now, but this just seems like another beat writer pissed that he no longer has Herm around to tell him game plans and such. I agree Mangini is a bit on the paranoia side, but can't they at least give him a chance. Anyway, let me know how you feel. Is it just me??? http://www.nj.com/jets/ledgerblog/index.ssf?/mtlogs/njo_sl_jets/archives/2006_08.html#170540 Wednesday, August 09, 2006 Pre-season paranoia After coach Eric Mangini?s paranoia reached an all-time low when he handed out a depth chart that listed the starters in alphabetical order, he refused to say who his starting quarterback would be in Friday?s preseason opener in Tampa. Eric, it?s a pre-season game for goodness sakes. Besides, anyone who has been paying attention knows that your quarterback competition is a sham and it has already been decided that Pennington will be the starter on opening day. Mangini was also mum on the Curtis Martin front, nevermind Martin is beloved by Jets fans who want an honest update on the future Hall of Famer. Mangini?s information blackout is our problem, I know, but enough is enough and he needs to meet the media and the fans halfway at times. I mean, he wouldn?t even confirm that S Erik Coleman had his appendix removed after it was reported in two publications. Come on, Eric. You?re looking mighty small. How is keeping that from the media going to help you win a football game? Again, it?s the pre-season! Already, one highly-respect newspaper has sent a columnist out to do a hatchett job - and a very good one - on Mangini and his ridiculous paranoia. It?s only going to get worst, especially if he loses. He wants to be like Bill Belichick (three Super Bowl rings) but he hasn?t even won a pre-season game yet. And even Belichick told the media today that LB Tedy Bruschi would miss all the preseason with a wrist injury. I see happening to Mangini what happened to Belichick in Cleveland. Belichick had an acrimonious relationship with the media there and as soon as he started losing, the media piled on with a vengence and ran him out of town. If Mangini keeps this up, he should keep his bags packed. By the way, the Jets had a lackluster practice in the morning with all four quarterbacks throwing at least one interception in 7-on-7 and 11-on 11 passing drills. It was nothing to be alarmed about because the defense knew a pass was coming. The Jets travel to Tampa tomorrow. The entire organization is holding its breath until Pennington takes his first hit. -Hutch
I am starting to agree with the fact that he is keeping everything a secret. But I hate it when Bellicheck does it, why not say if someone broke a wrist or whatever. Hating him because of this, is stupid. It is a mere annoyance to me.
I don't really like what he wrote either, but I do hate how mangini is so tight lipped about everything, is he going to be like this all season? Its one thing to not talk about the starting QB, but why can't he clairfy whats going on with erik coleman?
Its paranoia plus insecurity. He isn't even talking to his players and he'll lose them before mid season if that high school BS continues,. He isn't cut out for the job. The Jet fan base will shrink by midseason as the losses pile up and he continues to be the insecure person he is. The Jet fan base is the smallest in New York. It gained significantly during the Parcells and Edwards era, but the vast majority are casual fans who follow the team when they are exciting. They now have the weakest roster and coaching staff in the NFL. Other teams get 30,000 to 50,000 thousand fans out to see scrimmages and practices in their Home Stadiums, the Jets get a few thousand diehards out to the Giants Stadium last week. He's already had to cut out some of the high school coaching crap... Notice how the one on one tackling drills ended after the first serious and unpardonable injury in those drills. If he thinks he's going to win a war with the media in NY he's crazy.
I don't think your coffee will help. The media is circling the wagons hoping this guy fails. The media knows 2 things that for the most part people only know what they tell us! And given time they can sway just about everyone (who doesn't believe them) to believe they are right. Part of the problem is the media is lazy! They don't want to have to work for a story but have it given to them and let them present it anyway they want. What i don't agree with is the Martin reference in his article - It is better for the Jets if the rest of the league does not know Martin is finished because that way they cannot make us overpay in a trade. But now they know we are are in dire need of a starting calibar RB. So any chance of getting a fair trade is dead.
A) It was very hot on Saturday. There is a lot for people to do in NJ/NY. Watching a football practice in scorching weather is not most people's idea of fun. B) Do you have any proof other teams get 30,000-50,000 fans out to their practices, or is that just pulled from your backside? Those numbers seem awfully absurd. Steelers and Packers fans might be that sick, but I don't know the other 30 teams are drawing that many fans for practices. Maybe I'm wrong. As for the rest of your post, I'm going to have to Beavis you.
I thought about the Cleveland thing a while back. Not so much the media relationship but more of having a short stint with the Jets with it might not working out and moving on to another team to create a winner. That's just the pessimist in me. But the positive that I can get out of that is Mangini saw what happened in Cleveland. Lets hope he can use that to avoid the problems Belichick had. But I agree baamf it's too early to be jumping on Mangini like this and making ridiculous portraits of him before he takes off with this team. He's young and a bit brash kinda like Chad was with the media when he tried to put them on notice by not talking to them. So I think this is just a phase but I hope the journalist don't get hasty and muck this up until we see what a true coach Mangini is.
Rajen your post is pretty much highschool BS as well. How can you make a statement like "He isn't cut out for the job" when you have yet to see him coach a game? So long as the Jets get progressivly better and win games, I couldnt care any less if Mangini ever tells the media what they want to hear. But on the same token, if the jets get progressivly worse and lose more and more games than I would be more apt to say that Mangini's silence is not helping.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!! Man, it cracks me up to see you latch on like a dog on a bone to this story. You were like one of those vultures up there just circling for hours waiting... biding your time. Personally, I'm glad he's tight-lipped and giving the media a big FU. I'm going to give the guy the benefit of the doubt that he has a plan. Sure, Mangini might not work out at all, in fact I would even say that the odds against him being great here are against us, but there are no clear-cut slam dunk winners that you are going to elevate to HC. Even the great BP has come and gone without a SB trophy coming home. Relax, and enjoy the season. We're rebuilding, it isn't the end of the world. Let the guy do his job and celebrate our differences.
blah blah blah.... honestly, who cares about the so-called fanbase that we might lose....it will shrink by midseason if we lose???? The vast majority are "casual fans", aka not real fans that stick with their team during the bad times but suddenly pop up when the team is doing good as if they are a fan....So exactly, what "fans" will we lose??? Bandwagoners like you????? Don't let the door hit your ass on the way out fake....
The bottom line is the less information other teams have about us, the better. Why take a chance at providing some info that could help other teams prepare against us? He's probably taken some organizational standards from NE that help prevent info from being provided to the other team and implemented it in NY. Yes it is preseason, but does that mean he should share information he normally wouldn't? It's his first year as a coach, he needs practice too. Maybe 3 years down the road he'll decide that he can share more info in the preseason, but if this helps him get used to how he's going to handle the media in the regular season than so be it. The preseason isn't just for the players, it's for the coaches too. Especially rookie coaches. I would be fine with him not even speaking with the media. If they want to bitch about it, let them - he's obviously doing what he thinks is best for the team.
I think Eric will lighten up to the media during the regular season when the position battles aren't going on anymore.
Smallest fan base in NY? How far in advance are our tickets sold out? Why don't you go take a leap off of a Pirate ship.
While I do feel Mangini is going a little overboard with the secrecy. The writers really need to stop all the bitching. I don't have the link but yesterday a times writer named Selena Roberts was crying about Mangini while pining away for Edwards like he got her thighs moist
whatever the media sucks. theyve killed culture and make good money doing it. now edwards is gone and they have to actually work or put cognitive thought into a story they can only lash out and jump the gun on judging mangini and defining the style of a coach who doesnt even have a W or L under his belt yet. it should be expected, mangini should eventually lighten up, i imagine hes focused on setting the depth chart and evaluating his own roster right now instead of conference etiquette or media relations. the only thing that makes media coverage worse is losing, so im sure hes doing all he can to make sure it doesnt happen. once the season starts I imagine he'll collect himself and eventually realize exceptions need to be made from the NE front office MO.
