Jason and Nick are doing great work at OTC nyjetscap @nyjetscap If you wanted to play #NFL GM our friend Nick has pretty much developed the coolest interactive tool to do it http://overthecap.com/introducing-salary-cap-calculator/
Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but we're roughly $20 mil under the cap going into '14 and that's BEFORE we can cut/restructure Cromartie, Sanchez, Holmes (for a max savings of $25 mil)? Hell of a job by Idzik to get that far under the cap that quickly based on where we were last year.
Awesome awesome tool. We can be 40 million below the cap once we get rid of Sanchez and restructure Cro and cut Holmes.
We ate a lot of pain this year to get to that number. It's why going into this season the talking heads expected us to tank. We had a Rookie QB, head coach on the hot seat, new GM cutting costs, 7 new starters on defense and at least half that on offense, we looked to be a mess. This season has been a gift from Rex and company and thing a only look up right now.
There are a number of guys on there that will restructure but still won't be cheap. That being said Idzik has done a hell of a job squeezing talent out of this year without jeopardizing the future cap. (cough) Mike T (cough).
So far so good wth Idzik but I don't see what he did that was so great salary cap wise. The cuts he made were pretty standard and cutting Sanchez and Holmes are also obvious moves. Not saying he is doing anything wrong, I just think the cuts are easy decisons. As for the Revis trade, he gets credit but that decision clearly was Woody's. Time will tell if he is a great GM and I'm thinking he will be solid. Very much incomplete though at this point.
Well, he deserves major credit for not giving Cromartie an extension. After his excellent year last year, a lot of GMs would have extended him and that would have made him uncuttable in 2014 even though in 2013 we're finding out that he has declined enormously. When you get stuck with a high-priced low-production player, that's one of those things that really holds a team back, so I do give Idzik credit for avoiding easy-to-make mistakes. So far his 1st draft class looks pretty great, with Richardson being an immediate Pro Bowl caliber player even as a rookie, and a potential franchise QB in the second round, as well as a bunch of other players who are starting in their first year. If Millner ends up becoming league average or better (a big if, but I don't think Rex would be so firmly in his corner if he really felt like he didn't have potential) then I'd say this is a really good draft class. Of course, you need to see where things are ~3 years out to really make a judgment on it, and like they say, it takes about 4 seasons before you get a good sense of how a GM is doing (that way you can judge 2 draft classes.) So far he doesn't seem to have made any terrible blunders and he has made some good decisions, so we'll see how it pans out. 2014 will be the big opportunity, since we will have 12 picks, including 4 in the first 3 rounds.
I had read somewhere that the cap savings could reach upwards $45M depending on the decisions we make. The question I have is do we spend all these savings going after the big name FAs this off-season or do we continue the frugal approach signing some inexpensive lesser known FAs here and there?
Keep in mind that our $26 million of cap space does not include some starters including: Calvin Pace Willlie Colon Austin Howard Nick Folk (MVP candidate) There are also some decent backups we may want to resign along with our draft picks. We also have Coples, Cromartie, Harris and our entire DL to extend if we want to keep them around for a while. There are some very good players available in free agency but the cap space available is always less than it seems.
I am not sure about spending it all next year, BUT this next draft is as big if NOT bigger then his first. Meaning this draft so far has worked out well above what I would have thought, BUT now we need more. NOW we need to supply Geno with the weapons he needs. ( Wide Receivers ) If we can do that and he has one more year under his belt we will finally be sticking a fork into teams and not winning by field goals. With this defense and a high power offence OH MAN LOOK OUT. Go Jets
stay frugal. next year is not the year to blow the wad on a big name to put us over the top. the foundation is still being laid and we aren't a player away from a championship run. we are going to see other team cap casulties, forgotten depth chart guys and talented but need a change of scenery guys pitted against draft picks in next years training camp quantity over quality until psotion begin to solidify. maybe idzic year 4 will we see a big name f.a. but even then i doubt it becaue we will have mangold and brick preparing for life after football and we will be cycling in tackles and centers to replace them.
Idzik's General Managership really kicks in after the end of this season. Gents, not to hijack this cap-talk, but how 'bout a golf clap for the OP's avatar? What tits!!! (*)(*)
If im Idzik im not making any significant signings. Continue to build from within, dont make the mistake Tanny did in 2010 and go all in. Lets build a team that will be able to compete year after year.
Agreed on in-season moves. I'm more talking about people giving credit to Idzik for "fixing" our salary cap. Reality is he hasn't had to do much to get cap in good shape.
