The one area of concern (among many) that I think should worry us is the LB situation. It's a position we've neglected drafting, taking only David Harris in 2007 and Demario Davis in 2012. That's 2 in the last 6 years. We, instead, opt to pay for the position (Pace, Bart) and we immediately see a dramatic drop off in quality in 2 years time (Pace, Bart). Going from what I saw in preseason Demario looked lost. Harris, we know, had his share of problems last year, and jury's still out if he can perform to 2009/2010 levels. Sadly he looks like he's in decline. Our other option Antoine Barnes looked good (minus the penalties of course), but outside that who do we really have? Pace? Sapp? Bellore? McIntyre? There's a serious lack of talent in our LB pool. I understand Idzik had to ensure our OL was solid going forward (build through trench philosophy) but I think this is our biggest area of concern. Teams will abuse us in the short game, and probably the run game if Harris doesn't go back to pre 2012 levels and Demario Davis doesn't figure out what the hell he's doing. I hope I'm wrong, but I think outside of QB it's the biggest weakness the Jets have at the moment.
McElroy McElroy is the best of the 3 QBs, he should start...Sanchez should stop wearing that girly headband, it makes him look like a hairy woman.. They should play a 4-3 defense,, gets more pressure on the QB and they have more talent on the defensive line then at linebacker.. The pass blocking was good, the run blocking was terrible,,McKnight should be there starting RB,
I'm worried about depth at MLB. Behind Harris and Davis there's really no one that's worthy. Davis did look a little lost, but he'll be alright. I'm not worried about him yet.
Unless you work for the Jets or have a lot of money bet on the Jets doing well this season, there's nothing to worry about. They may suck and you know what - that's OK.
there were to many enormous problems for idzik to fix in one(and wont be able to in just 2 either) offseasons. linebacker is certainly an enormous issue. both in the run and in coverage/pass rushing. Harris is trash and has been for a long time. dude was isanely overrated to begin with. I like davis, and mcintyer as well but those guys arent game changers. our run defense really worries me. espeically with how the rest of the division looks to be when it comes to running the ball.
There's no question about it. Our LB'er corp has looked like the slowest in the league the last few years. The Jets D will struggle containing the opposition's running game as long as our LB's are slow and unathletic.
Defense To run a 3-4 defense you need very good linebackers and the JETS don't have that,,What they do have is a lot of talent on Defensive line, so they should run a 4-3 and depend on a good pash rush and run defense from the big guys up front,,Ryan wont do that though, he is the worst coach at making adjustments ever..He gets one thing in his head and sticks with it regardless of how its doing till the ship sinks..Sanchez last year is perfect example..After they were 3-5 at mid season Sanchez should have lost the starting job,,,,Start McElroy, hes the best of all 3 QBs and with playing time he will get better.
Harris is still a solid ILB, but his production is predicated on having the right guys with him. Bart was that guy 3 years ago. The OP says Barnes looked good - I will admit I only watched the game once, but he stood out to me on a few instances as the opposite not looking good, being lost or beaten badly. Our best player at LB is a 4-3 DE/DT playing out of position. Living in NC, I love Coples and the pick and thought Rex was moving towards a 4-3, but if this was the plan we should have went with someone else. As a core - LB is the biggest weakness on the defense and the team.
I think Idzik should probably address this weakness in the early rounds next year. We need a mainstay in there to replace Harris.
Ryan should take a page from the Giants Defense,, a good solid defensive front 4 to get pressure on QB and stop the run,,On offense everything start with the offensive line, same goes for defense.
I see you keep repeating your self about this 43. What is confusing me is if your trolling or if you actually missed the fact that a majority of our defensive plays were ran with 4 guys in the dirt. Rex runs a hybrid 34/43 defense. Hence why coples was moved to an OLB/DE type position. Who exactly would be the 3 coverage linebackers that you would run in a true 43 defense?
There's a lot of positions it seems like we need to address in the early rounds. OLB and safety are two positions that concern me. I really hope by the end of the year we are okay at WR, HB, and QB so we don't need to use a high pick on those positions.
I'm hoping that Rex's creativity will mitigate the lack of talent in the middle of the D. I'm looking forward to seeing some interesting looks on defense this season as Rex tries to balance the talent up front and in the backfield with a questionable LB core. Hopefully they look more like Rex's 09 squad than last year's version...
09 had an excellent OL, and very good running game, that allowed Sanchez to not have to do too much and the Defense a lot of breathing room.
If you gave our starting defense to any other HC or DC to manage, Rex would still get the most out of it by far.
Your more than just a little clueless about our defense. Not sure if your a new troll or just a fan that has next to no football knowledge.
You guys must not remember the days of Mark Brown and Victor Hobson.... Dont worry about the D, its been top 10 for 4 yrs in a row. With RR calling the plays, you should be excited about it. The problems are on offense.
