I'm heading to my wife's brother's for Thanksgiving and I've got to get a good book, or I'm gonna go nuts. Any good recommendations? This are some examples of the kind of stuff I like:

    - The Harry Potter Series (much more than kid-stuff)
    - Ayn Rand novels (especially "Atlas Shrugged")
    - Stephen King ("The Stand", "It", etc...except he doesn't know how to end a book)
    - "Nineteen Eighty-Four", "Brave New World", "Fahrenheit 451"
    - Some of the better Dean Koontz ("Strangers", "Watchers", "Lightning")
    - "Catch-22", "Watership Down", "Bonfire of the Vanities"
    - "The Da Vinci Code", "Pillars of the Earth", "The Alienist"

Generally speaking, I like longer books with lots of characters and unexpected plot twists.

Got any ideas for something I might like?

    Thanks in advance,
    DbJ

If you haven't read it yet, The Great Gatsby is an absolutely fantastic read.

    I only read non-fiction.

    My highest recommendations are:
    The Autobiography of Malcolm X
    Ghost Soldiers
In the Heart of the Sea

I could also recommend some quality sports books, if interested.

If you haven't already read it, the Lord of the Rings trilogy is long with tons of characters, but any plot twists are probably ruined by the movies if you saw them.

Definitly go with either Deception Point or Digital Fortress by Dan Brown or pick up Along Came a Spider by James Patterson.. you can also pick up any other James Patterson.. they all have so many plot twists and action

I've read all the Dan Brown books. Liked "A&D" alot. "DP" was good, didn't like "DF" too much. My only complaint is that his books follow too much of a formula.

It's actually sitting on my shelf...a strong possibility. I read some of it in HS, but I don't remember too much.

Well its one of my favorite books. A relatively quick read though, when compared with some of the other books you've listed. I don't know how much time you want to read in order to avoid your inlaws, so...

Atlas Shrugged, The Fountainhead and Anthem are all great. Atlas Shrugged may be my favorite book.

I've read a bunch of Patterson. I read "Kiss the Girls" first and nothing else every lived up to that one.

Read it. Liked it. I'm one of the few though who liked the movies better.

I'm reading that one right now... I started with the newer ones not knowing that it was part of a bigger series so I started back at the beginning

The philosophy parts are a bit draw out, but the plot is really good and the mystery is great.

as for an actual reccomendation if you don't mind fantasy type stories Terry Goodkind is an Ayn Rand disciple and not only do they share the same mental disorder known as objectivism but their books share many of the same concepts.
