Even with the interceptions, poor play calling and ignoring the running game, the Jets still scored 28 points. What is alarming to me is over the past three games, the Jet defense has faced Ryan Fitzpatrick, Jemarcus Russell and Tyler Thigpen. Against three of the worst quarterbacks in the league, they have exactly ZERO interceptions. None. Zilch. Can any of their defensive backs make a play? Has Kerry Rhodes entered Witness Protection? Eric Smith is awful. teams throw at Revis because he doesn't scare them. Lowery is a step too late too often and the nickel corners as a bunch do not add up to an effective CB. The lack of pass rush contributes to this, but receivers are getting open immediatelyand allowing quick release succeful plays. While all the attention is on Favre's struggles and stringing up Mangini, this defense cannot be ignored. The only way the last three teams even stayed in the game against the Jets were because they forced turnovers. The Jets defense has lost all ability to do this and the team will continue to struggle until they make some plays. No tipped balls, no great reads (though Coleman dropped one today) and no hits forcing fumbles. The last Jets interceotion was by Revis to end the Cardinal game. Far too long ago.
Doesn't Come easy all the time but damn we made thigpen a 3rd stringer look pretty good but thats the same story with us. Atleas we escaped with a W.
Are you trying to knock Revis?? He has been AWESOME Rhodes plays ed reed territory which your not going to get picks
Are you trying to tell me the Jets Defense should have this surreal ability to fool the opposing QB into throwing the pass at Jets DBs? If you still don't get what I mean: look at how Terrell Suggs intercepted Chad the "Most Accurate Passer in the History of NFL" Pennington last week, and returned the INT for 6. Basically, Ravens fooled the protection scheme, and overloaded the left side *by 5 on 2* and left a DT on the right, while dropping Suggs back in coverage. As the ball is snapped, the guys on the right side falls back into coverage, while the left side flushes into the pocket, coming within a grasp of sacking Pennington. Pennington forces the ball in Patrick Cobb's direction, and Suggs jumps in the middle, snagging the ball. My point? No NFL QBs are that stupid to intentionally throw toward the opposing DBs. (Ah. Today's Favre is an exception.) This means one thing - you must FORCE him to make a mistake. How do you do that? By applying pressure. Now, with Bob Sutton calling the shots... good luck applying pressure. You'll need a lot to apply substantial pressure with 3 men rushing. Not every NFL team has that kind of putrid OL that Cardinals has.
10 turnovers forced, 7 vs Arizona. 3 in the other 6 games, thats pathetic. This defense has playmakers, we have a pussy for a def coordinator
This exactly my point and my concern. The QB's we have faced the last three weeks played the best games of their careers against the Jets. That's scary. First, we aren't getting enough pressure. But second, the passers are feeling way too comfortable back there. This scheme isn't confusing anyone. They are reading their keys and their first option is getting open. The throws are getting out before the rush has a chance to get there too often. When was the last time an opposing quarterback had to pull the ball down and hold it because of tight coverage? When was the last time we had a coverage sack? The good quareterbacks the Jets have played have mostly picked them apart. Pennington, Rivers, Cassel and Warner's second half played pitch and catch with their receivers. There have been too many "easy" drives against thsi defense. The Chiefs before the half, The cardinals multiple times, Chad's last two that almost won the game, the Raiders in overtime. It is not too much to ask the secondary to make a big play once in awhile. Their last interception was 4 weeks ago. They simply are doing a horrible job. And yes, I do think Mangini and Sutton share the blame, but playmakers have to make plays and guys like Revis are not.
We weren't outplayed. The only things the Chiefs did better than us were not turning the ball over and not missing a field goal. We didn't outplay them by a whole lot, but we were the better team.
dude....the Chiefs were playing their 3rd string QB....who was getting raped by other teams.....but looked above average against our defense. No Larry Johnson.....Brandon Flowers, a rookie, had 2 INTs including one for a TD. Tell me again how we weren't outplayed? We should've destroyed this team...
The fact that they looked crappy against other teams means nothing. Between the two teams on the field, the Jets were the better team. Favre made dumb mistakes that helped keep the Chiefs close, but out of the two teams playing on the field today, the Jets were slightly better in pretty much every aspect.
doesn't that scare you though?....the fact that we were only "slightly" better than the chiefs? Maybe my expectations are too high...but i didn't think we would be playing "close" games with teams as bad as the Chiefs and Raiders. I expected a well-oiled machine (our offense) to steam roll these teams.... Maybe our team isn't there yet....maybe it's the coaching.....all i know is...the Jets spent a lot of money in the offseason to make this team a contender....and i don't think it's paying off. Not when we're squeaking out wins against bottom feeding teams. Just my opinion.
I thought you got it, but then you didn't quite get it. If Rhodes is back in coverage, there's absolutely nothing he can do to force the QB into bad decision making. Neither can any secondary players for that matter. It falls squarely on the front seven. The secondary's job is twofold: At the earlier phase of the play (immediately after the snap) they should be staying tight on the coverage. Second part is to stay aware of the situation, and pick off the pass if the QB throws an errant one. Till that happens, secondary has nothing to force the bad play from the QB. Rather, dreadful front seven - especially front 3/4 - can always disguise the weakness of the secondary, simply because they just don't allow the QB the time he needs to find his open players. Remember. If you let the opposing QB make the play (by allowing him all the time in the world) he will. Even against the very best secondary, he will. I can assure you. So the question comes down to whether Jets front seven could actually apply sufficient pressure to force errant throws from the opposing QBs. If the opposing QBs don't have enough time and has to throw a prayer every once in a while - and if the secondary just doesn't pick that off, then the blame goes to the secondary. What I've seen is nothing like that. QBs had all the time in the pocket, very comfortable. You won't have a single chance in hell to pick off a pass if the QB plays in that state.
I am sorry you have to be a complete and utter idiot not to ask the following questions based on the info below: Is it the defense getting unlucky with mediocre back-ups and/or first round busts having seemingly mistake free career games against the Jets. or Is it this defense just not applying enough pressure? and/or Is it poor scheming? and/or game planning and/or in-game adjustments by the coaching staff? Based on the play of this defense I am sorry these questions need asking!
My posts have been answer to your question. It's 1) lack of pressure 2) Poor SoP (Standard Operating Procedure - refer to 3-men rush on every fucking 3rd down) 3) Poor Scheming 4) poor in-game adjustment.
I never said that doesn't scare me. I'm just arguing that the Jets were a better football team on the field today than the Chiefs. Not by a ton, but by enough. Should we be a lot better? Absolutely. Though I would like to see Thigpen's development beyond this game because he played very well.
does that not scream fire Sutton? Lets blitz Kerry Rhodes 18 yards off the line some more. I have never seen that done where the safety goes around the pocket when blitzing from that far out. They always blitz down the middle of the pocket collapsing from within. Why can't ol man Bob do whats been working for decades instead of being retarded?
