Or perhaps simply don't want to accept. The Jets are re-building. This is painfully obvious. With that comes making picks that are simply BPA. BPA implies BPA on the Jets board. Idzik has already stated they got 2 of their top 4 players. They aren't taking a one year vision approach. They are trying to build a team which will stretch beyond this year. Could the Jets have drafted another player at either pick to fill holes? Sure. But looking a bit longer term (by NFL standards)that is clearly not nor should be the plan for this team. The plan is to draft the best players on the board in the effort of building their roster. This is what teams re-building (or teams that successfully rebuild) do. They acquire the best talent available in drafts. The Jets felt Sheldon was a top talent in the draft. In fact, many people scratched their heads when Seattle picked Bruce Irvin when both considering needs and others on the board. That worked out pretty well I'd say... This is a bigger picture thing. Many are reacting because they are thinking of how this fits next year, but this is going to be a process that stretches beyond this year. Once we as fans accept that, the more this will make sense. You can tell me they should have addressed offense. But at each pick there simply wasn't top offensive talent available. This was known heading in and shouldn't be a shock. You can also tell me they should have traded down, but you simply have no idea what offers if any they were getting and if the trade down was warranted. Rounds 2 - 3 I am pretty confident we'll see offensive selections....Hang tight guys, it's only day 1.
I was pissed that we didn't select Star or Floyd at 13 instead of Richardson. Floyd fell so who knows. I'm alright with this draft, though.
I can understand Star, the guy has a heart issue. A clear concern that may have caused the Jets to shy away. As you noted, Floyd fell too. The Jets weren't the only team not to take him.
I wanted Star but Im not a fan of Floyd at all. Theres a reason he dropped so far. Star fits our need at NT though I wish we picked him if we were going to go O line.
I think people are putting way too much stock into idzik saying we got 2 of our top 4 players. What did you expect hom to say? Yea we really got fucked hard when the bills traded out of that 8 spot. We were going to take austin and had a trade lined up if he wasn't there. Then every damn player we wanted went 10, 11, 12 and I was left with my dick in my hand.
I agree with the OP, I'm sick of the unwarranted criticism in my opinion. The Jets clearly did not want to draft based on filling holes they currently have, if they had that plan front and center they should have drafted a QB first, but I'm happy they didn't because the talent at QB just wasn't there for a 9th overral compared to other players available. The Jets are building for the long term and you do that by getting guys that will be on the team for a long time and these two picks will be on this time for a long time I believe. I feel like no matter who the Jets picked there would be fans decrying the move, I like what Idzik has done so far and have confidence in him going forward. One of the things that I found ironic though, was that in trading Revis, I thought one of the criticisms of that move was that it creates another hole at CB, and when the Jets fill that hole by drafting the best CB available, people still are not happy when they attempt to fill that hole. I just find that funny in a sad way.
jets defense was good last year-----we neededto give mark lots of help---warmack at 9 would help with protection and effert at te would give him a target to throw to sanchez had a good ol in 2009 and 2010-----warmack--colon-- howard ---dbrick and mangold would have given jets strong ol for next several years
the other 2 of that top 4 were dion jordan (or mingo) and tavon austin if I had to guess. If Austin wasn't taken at #8 we very well may have taken him at #9. But he wasn't. We were left w the board we had and the Jets went with the guys they had rated highest. 49ers are a great example of the opposite. They are close to a SB win, and traded up to fill a hole. This makes sense for immediate impact. The Jets are not in that situation. The Dolphins are going all in and traded up to #3 essentially giving up their entire draft for one player. Depending on who you ask, you could argue that made sense. They went for a highly rated player to fill a hole.
I wonder how many of the comments and feelings of most people on this forum would be if Mel Kipers big board didn't exist...
Agreed. People acting like we're gonna be a great team next year. We took the guys at the top of our draft board. And a bunch of talent is still left, so relax.
yes but again you are thinking of filling holes. does warmack make sense at #9 as BPA? I don't think so and the Jets didn't either....and Eifert at #13? No thanks. There are guys like Ertz amongst others who will be available in the 2nd and 3rd.
Stop talking about BPA as if it's a law. If you have spent the last two drafts picking DTs in the first round, and they are both producing, then it is illogical to go with BPA. You need to build a team. The jets have three first rounders who all play the same position now, but only two spots on the field for them. HOW IS THAT VALUE????
not only the best CB available. The best CB in the draft class by a longshot. IDK how people feel about Sports Science, but I highly recommend checking it out on Dee.
When the Colts pick next, if the BPA is a QB, should they pick him? Or MAYBE, they should pick the SECOND best who isn't at a position that they just filled last year?
BPA is and was always known to be the clear strategy of the Jets heading into the draft. They've said it numerous times prior to tonight. It's the law for the Jets this year and it's their plan. So in fact it is law. And no, they don't all play the same position on the field. They play 3 different positions on the field. And moving Shelden to the outside at DE could let us move Coples to OLB if we so choose.
once again, the Colts are not rebuilding. So no they shouldn't. They should take BPA at positions of need. Clearly different situation, so clearly different draft strategy.
I'll just put this here.... http://www.jsonline.com/sports/top-defensive-linemen-in-nfl-draft-rt9i5la-204028711.html
