As, everyone knows Ricky Henderson will be an easy winner. The only question as this article asks is how close to unanimous his selection will be. That brings us to the others and I was reading this article and became flabbergasted that Blyleven has been left out for so many years. The two paragraphs I read that were a jaw dropper to me are these. "In his first eight seasons (1970-77), Blyleven made 82 quality starts in which he either lost or got a no-decision (and by quality start, I mean at least six innings/two or fewer earned runs, or at least seven innings/three or fewer earned runs — not the lame standard MLB uses). His ERA in those 82 starts? 2.19. And his record? 0-53! No misprint, folks — 0-53. Here are two most-galling year-by-year results: 1972 with Minnesota: 0-9 with a 2.35 ERA in 13 of the aforementioned starts, and 1974 with Minnesota: 0-8 with 1.80 ERA in 10 of the aforementioned starts." http://nbcsports.msnbc.com/id/28564953/ Maybe this will be his year.
I don't know if Blyleven will ever get in. Every sport's HoF has stories of guys who should be there, who never will be. This is one of those stories. I can't see Henderson missing a single vote. I don't like him as a person, but as a ballplayer, he was amazing.
He's another guy I don't think will make his way in but probably deserves to. Don Mattingly too. He won't be a unanimous selection. I'd bet on that. That's a good idea, too. Can we get some vBookie action on all this? I think Tom Seaver still is in the lead as to being the closest to unanimity. He received 98 point something percent of the vote.
Duh, there was an article on this already for some reason the writers never vote 100% on a guy no matter who it is. Some bs about tradition or something.
Hmph, I was totally unaware of that. I just assumed there had been unanimous picks before. That's freaking stupid. This is why former players should vote, not writers.
There are apparently some writers who think that since Ty Cobb and Babe Ruth weren't unanimous, no one should be. Seaver is currently highest at 98.8%. It's already known for sure that Rickey won't be unanimous: http://deadspin.com/5125268/octogen...-henderson-off-his-hof-ballot-hilarity-ensues
Too many problems with players having the vote. The majority of the current players have no idea about the history of the sport. How many players would vote for ex-teammates even if the guy was just pretty good as opposed to great? On and on. Way too many issues.
It is thinks like this that doesn't allow me to take the HOF seriously. Whoever decided to not vote Cobb, Ruth, Seaver, etc should have their vote revoked immediately due to stupidity
I'm happy for Jim Rice getting in but Andre Dawson should have gotten in also. It'll be interesting next year to see if Barry Larkin and Edgar Martinez especially get in and if McGwire can get more votes.
I can see the point there. I just think sportswriters often don't factor in things that another player definitely would. You do make an excellent point though.
I can't wait to hear Ricky's HOF speech. Glad to see Jim Rice make in on his final ballot. I loved watching the guy in his prime.
