As my first post here, I'd like to introduce myself to you as a long-time Jets fan from the old AFL days. I grew up in Alabama, still live in the South, and I have been a Jets fan as long as I have been a pro football fan. Alabama alum Joe Namath was of course the reason in the beginning, but I never lost my desire to see the Jets succeed and win football games all these years later. I've never seen the Jets play live, never been in the city of New York, no family or other connections to the city whatsoever, I just caught Jets fever as a kid and never got over it. I'm fairly sure we won't always agree on everything, even though we all root for the same team. I hope that total agreement on every matter is not a requirement here as it seems to be other places in the cyber world. Disagreement can and should be respectful, and I hope to be respectful of others at all times. For the most part, I will use this site to obtain news and insight on my favorite team, but I also hope to share my thoughts and hear yours as well. Thank you for accepting me as a member and I hope we all get to celebrate many victories together. Go Jets and God Bless.
Welcome to the board, I hope you enjoy it here. There are times when disagreements get personal on here, and there are some who will try to shout you down if you don't agree with what they say, but you will soon work out who is likely to do this and there are lots of great posters who make up for it. I personally have learned a lot about football directly from this board and love it here.
Welcome Bama. I hope you can enjoy the board. I assume you follow college football closely. So please share your thoughts on Draft section
Welcome Bama. This is a great site to follow our team on. For the most part it's a great group of people. You may run into some who are overwhelmingly negative and pick fights on almost any topic. We all have different opinions which is great to see other views, however, some go a bit over board but the Mods are great about defusing them or a situation. I have family in Alabama that moved from NY. They have been there for years and raised their kids and now have extended family. Was just there in January for a wedding and sat through a heated debate over Crimson Tide and Auburn - Alabama is very passionate about their college teams! Enjoy TGG site and GO JETS!!!!
Welcome Bama, based on your description of being a fan back in the old AFL days you are probably in the same age frame as me I am 58 and this has caused many years of hope and disappointment. Hopefully the future will bring some type of success in at least making it to the big dance. 44 Years of waiting has been enough.
Thanks for all the kind replies, and even for the other one that I fail to understand. To address a couple of things brought up, yes I do follow college football (more than the NFL) and of course I am an Alabama fan. Living in the South all my life (born in Alabama, last 30 years in Nashville area) I am most familiar with the SEC, but I'm not an "all-SEC all the time" fan. I'm 54 years old, so I was just shy of my 9th birthday in January of 1969 when the Jets won Super Bowl III. I look back at the enormity of that upset, but at the time I had no doubt about the Jets winning. Namath's guarantee was a no-brainer to me at the time. I also expected the Jets would win every Super Bowl after that too. Let's call it youthful optimism. ;-) Speaking of Namath, as I said before, his being a Jet and Alabama alum is the main reason I'm a Jets fan, but ironically I was too young to even know about Joe until he was a Jet. Those of you my age or older realize that college football on television was not like it is today. You generally got one big game a week, and on rare occasions an afternoon game followed by a primetime game. Nothing like the cable-dominated world of today. I was already an Alabama fan when Joe played there, but personalities took a back seat to the team as a whole. It didn't matter who was wearing the crimson jersey, just that it was crimson. ;-) I try to follow Alabama players careers when they come into the NFL, and I always enjoy seeing them wearing the Jets green and white. It bothers me greatly when an Alabama player disappoints NFL fans, and I have read and heard some discontent over Dee Milliner's rookie season. I trust that he will continue to improve as he did in college. He was highly touted coming out of high school but had a shaky start before the light came on and he showed himself to be one of the best in college football. I hope his career path in the NFL is the same. But regardless of where a player spends his college years, when he becomes a Jet, he's on MY team. There are players on rival college teams that I'd love to someday see in a Jets uniform. Thanks again for the welcome.
Welcome Bama, This really is a good place to come and read about the Jets, I dont post a lot but i do reply when I feel I just have to. The people here are just as passionate about the JETS and express it all the time. If something breaks news wise it usually show up here quite fast. PS I am 52 and have been following the Jets since I was 14. Wish one day you can make it up here to New Jersey to see a game cause there is nothing like it in the world to be in the stands and watch it live. Again Welcome to the board.
Welcome BamaJet. Speaking of BamaJets, tell us a little about Richard Todd's Bama career, and whether or not you were totally pumped up when the Jets drafted him. I remember him as a runner, not a thrower, who's passing skills improved each year in the NFL.
He may have run more at Bama but I wouldn't really say his passing improved that much with the Jets. I think he only had 2 seasons with more TD's than INT's. One memory of Todd that is burned into my brain is the interception he threw to the Bills in in '81 wild card game.
Hey Rammer Jammer, Yellowhammer, welcome aboard Alabama. Go Jets and Roll Tide! : ) Haha......Stokes, you're like the guy who see Elvis around every corner. This is not a Dairy Queen amigo. : )
