Something that concerned me about last week’s game was the way Shonn Greene was assigned to block LaMarr Woodley on a couple of clear passing plays in the third period. Greene had been knocked dizzy early in the game but came back in the third quarter, which I thought was questionable at the time. Anyway, on a 2nd-and-18 on the first drive of the third quarter, Greene was asked to block Woodley one-on-one. It was a quick pass to Cumberland, so Woodley wasn’t able to generate much heat, but on the next play he blew past Howard to register a sack. Following a punt, a Steelers TD and Tebow’s three plays, Sanchez came in for his next play after the sack, on 2nd and 16. Greene was again one-on-one on Woodley, who applied the pressure (he actually got a hand on Sanchez) to force an incompletion. This might not sound like much, but to me so many things were wrong with this. Sanchez looked like he was getting rattled and the Pitt defense was cranking things up. Woodley was smelling blood after his sack and the Jets were in an obvious passing situation at 2nd and 16. In response to this, the Jets asked their running back, who himself was looking shaky, to block Woodley one-on-one. On top of this, it wasn’t even a fast-developing play like the one earlier. This just suggests to me that the coaching staff didn’t have a feel for the way the game was going. Most of us Jets fans watching were getting a sick feeling and could sense things getting out of control. Wasn’t there a safer play to dial up, something that might have allowed Sanchez and the offense to get back some of their composure? Did this frustrate anybody else?
Some of that may be on Sanchez. He is the one in charge of sliding protections. Any chance he slid the protection to the left expecting Woodley to drop back in coverage? That doesn't sound very smart with a premiere pass rusher.
