I just saw that we picked up Zach Hilton off waivers from the Saints. I think this is an awesome signing for a few reasons: 1. He really came on at the end of last season having 30 of his 35 receptions in the last 7 games. I was even thinking about picking him up as a late round backup in my fantasy league. 2. He's a monster... 6'8", 265. He could definitely be an asset in the blocking game as well as the passing game. He's definitely an upgrade over dreesen.. especially as someone we picked up off waivers. I'm surprised the saints cut him with Brees being used to a big TE target to throw to. Most likely an upgrade over jolley, but we'll have to see I guess. He most likely will not have a huge impact from the start, but I expect him to be worked into the offense soon as mangini will utilize his talents and strengths in 2 TE formations and in goal-line situations. Love this signing.
You do know the reason the Saints cut him right? Just because he is 6'8 doesnt mean he will be a good blocker. He is a great reciever but he is too one dimensional, hence the reason the Saints cut him. That is also why we got Sean Ryan who is a very good blocker. You put the two of them together and you got one hell of a TE. Hilton is an awful blocker but an amazing pass catcher, Ryan is a very good blocker. Now lets see how Mangini can make that work with Baker in the mix. But Hilton is no savior because he cant block worth a damn. Youth?
I wasn't too sure about his blocking abilities. Thanks for the insight. Gotta figure we can make him into something with some work though. Let's hope. Right now baker is clearly the premier blocking TE on our roster.
Well Baker is actually a pretty good TE. He has always been a good blocker and became a very good reciever in his 3rd year. It takes project TE's a while to get accustomed. He played his tail off and showed what type of TE he could be at the end of 2004. Then was playing well last season while splitting time with an awful coach. Then he broke his leg and was on the IR. Now he is recovered guaranteed the starting job. This is his year to shine his 5th year and he has finally worked himself up to the starting job. He has the tools and has the chance now. With Schott Jr. running the Offense, the sky is the limit for Baker this year. He has nothing to lose and a new organization to work with who has giving him a chance to start from the get go. Jolley had the same chance but did nothing with it. Baker has outplayed all the TE's and has had a very quiet off season. But I really think people will start to learn his name this year. Very good blocker and very good reciever. Good safety net for Chad plus there is a lack for a real 2nd dependable WR. Baker and Dwight will recieve a lot of attention this year. Youth?
