Becton-A: You can nitpick on some of his injury issues, but he exceeded by expectations in year 1. Definitely a guy you can pencil in next year at left tackle and feel great about it Mims-B: Injuries slowed him down, but certainly looked much better than previous Jets 2nd round WRs as a rookie. Catches everything thrown at him. Feel good about him as a number 2. Davis-C: Give him credit for starting games as a rookie and even playing well on MNF. However, overall looked a bit shaky and wasn’t a factor on special teams as advertised. Zuniga-D: Injured most of the year (similar to his college career) didn’t do much to distinguish himself in limited playing time Perine-D: Was outplayed by 40 yr old Frank Gore, and scrap heap guys Johnson and Adams. Roster spot could be in jeopardy next season. Bilal Powell also struggled as a 4th round rookie so perhaps Perine can turn it around Morgan-F: Wasted Pick Mann-D: One of the worst punters in the NFL last season. Only thing keeping this from an F is his tackling abilities. Hall-A: Couldn’t ask for much more from a 5th round rookie coming off an injury. Started games and looked competent. Don’t view him as a sure fire starter, but has a chance. Quincy Wilson-F: Swing and a miss Overall: B A great draft nets one star and two starters. Feel good they have at least one star and one starter with potential for one of the late round guys to emerge. Dont like the Morgan, Mann, Wilson throw-away picks. That’s got to stop.
Horrible 4th round picks. Tyler Johnson would've looked real nice in green among other notables. Painful to watch him get better every game for TB. Overall I give this draft a B- in large part due to Becton weighing the curve.
Becton-A-: We know he's a solid starter at a minimum. Has to stay healthy. Dinged up a bit too much this year. Mims-B: Limited upside. Good number 2 but watching elite CB's vs him liek TreDavious White was painful. Solid Pick. Davis-C: Upside is there but again, can't stay healthy. May be too small for this league. Zuniga-D: Maybe Saleh can light a fire under him but saw nothing positive. Can we not draft Florida players ever again? Perine-D: Can we not draft Florida players ever again? Morgan-F: Wasted Pick Mann-B: Had a good leg I thought. Hall-A: Could be a nice starter for years to come. Need to see more. Great value. Overall: B. Besides Becton, very average draft class.
How can you grade Davis a C? The guy was the 68th pick in the draft, was absolutely lost out there when he played, and then got injured. Zuniga a D? You guys are generous. Bechton: A Mims: B Davis: F Zuniga: F Perine: D Clark: Inc Morgan: Inc Hall: A Mann: C Wilson: F
Outside of Becton, Mims and Hall I'm not sure we drafted any starters (not counting Mann). Perine is not a fit in the new offense, Davis looked lost for the most part, Zuniga was non-existant but he gets a pass for missing all of camp, Morgan was a horrendous pick from the get go, Clark didn't see the field. It's hard to know what we have but I do know that only a few of these guys showed signs of life. Not great. The fourth round is going to haunt us for a while I think.
Some of them are likely busts for sure and I would've liked another receiver because the league has seen mid round WRs play well this year. But ultimately it was a strange year with no training camp so its hard to judge them appropriately.
I don't know anywhere near enough about Clark to know if he's a fit for the new offense but the fact that he can seemingly play all 5 positions probably bodes well for his chances of making somewhat of an impact. Maybe a healthy Zuniga will be a player in a 4-3 defense? Davis just needs to be coached. He looked like he was being controlled by an 11 year old in Madden... totally lost but when he makes contact he makes it count. Luckily we have a head coach who might be decent at coaching defense.
I agree. I'm not suggesting any of the "F" players can't behind solid pros. Just grading their performance last year. Although I absolutely hated the Perine pick then and hate it even more now. I forgot who I was conversing with earlier this year, but it's pretty obvious that Perine lacks the explosiveness to be a play maker in this league.
Quincy Wilson was a Colts draft pick Bechton: A- Mims: B- Davis: D Zuniga: F Perine: D- Clark: Inc Morgan: Inc Hall: A Mann: C
It really does sum him up perfectly. Before the ball is in the air he's just running around like a chicken with his head cut off. As soon as the ball is in there and he knows where the play has to be made, he closes quickly and makes the hit. That's only gonna fly for so long. I have hope the Saleh can coach him up though, so I'm not saying he's a lost cause.
I think Davis has the best chance to turn out good. He never misses tackles when he isn’t lost in coverage. He’s actually was an elite tackler as a rookie.
I think these are correct. Of course it doesn't mean it'll reflect their career performances. At the very least I'd raise Davis to a D because he at least runs around like a madman trying to make plays. I also think he's better equipped to be a strong safety and we used Maye down in the box to compensate for a shitty pass rush. Davis isn't a deep third player IMO. Hall could be important for this team. We NEED to start drafting mid round starters here and there. Not all of them are going to hit but the last two starters we could at least plug in as starters moving forward were 2016 with Jenkins who has since proved to be below average and Brian Winters in 2013 who was average until later on in his career. That's about it for the decade other than DeMario Davis in 2012 who we pissed away and Powell in 2011 who was a backup RB. Fucking disgraceful.
We all know based on JD evaluation system, everyone selected with exception of day one starter has a 2-3 year window and are drafted for what they can become. Becton-A Mims-B Bryce Hall is the exception, he was slated to be a late first round pick but his injury hurt his draft position. Honestly it’s way too early to be passing out grades.
The Davis, Zuniga, and Morgan picks were pretty bad. Davis is likely to improve with time and a really good defensive coach. Zuniga was injured all camp. Morgan pick was inexcusable. So we nabbed 3 starters in this draft. Becton, Mims, and Hall. Upside on Davis and the jury is out on Clark + Zuniga. Not great but not terrible. One thing to consider when handing out these grades is just how bad our coaching staff was.
Davis started a few games and showed glimpses of potential. To me that is about what you can expect of a 3rd round rookie so I gave him a C. Zuniga at least got on the field. That’s why I gave him a D instead of an F. Agree that our Florida Gators scouting needs work.
The guy went from college ball to starting at the NFL against the best, that is too much for any player selected after first round. I’ll tell you what, he will have an accelerated learning curve compared to other guys coming in. I bet you will see a jump in his development this year and he will diagnose plays a lot faster leading to more pass breakups and interceptions.
