"NFL commissioner Roger Goodell is ready to move forward on expanding the regular season for 2010. And he wants to contract the preseason. Goodell says he understands that fans aren't happy about paying full price for preseason games. With the current offseason workout schedule teams use, there's no need for four preseason games. Some interesting questions come out of this. If the NFL expands to 17 games, who gets the extra home game? Or does it go overseas? The 1972 Dolphins and Emmitt Smith are ecstatic. Now, no one will be able to go undefeated. And Smith can say he's the rushing king for backs who played 16 games. I'm a huge NFL fan and am excited about this. I guess you could say this will water down the product, like the long MLB and NBA season does. But when the NFL season is over, I'm usually pretty depressed." http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/danpatrick/?eref=fromSI
Don it wouldn't water down the product at all. It's only another week for the fans. For the players another game is a very different story. The home game argument is interesting, they could just have a neutral site and play in Hawaii or a college stadium somewhere.
I think adding 1 or 2 games isn't a bad idea, as long as they can figure out an easy scheduling system, like it is now. The neutral site works well, until you realize they are expanding because people are sick of paying season ticket full price for preseason. No one will have "dibs" on these tickets and they probably won't sell out, unless they are overseas, which adds stress to all the players.
Put them in the Rose bowl, drop the prices 30 bucks and they make money. NFL will sell out wherever they go. You're probably right about Hawaii, what about Canton or a major city without an NFL team like Dover, Delaware.
The answer is 18 games and all of those problems go away. Regulars don't play in more than 2 games anyway in the pre-season. They will just have to make decisions on rookies using a little more thought than how they do against 2nd and 3rd string opponents.
drop to 3 preseason games, add on two more reg. season games, and force the owners to drop preaseason prices down to like $25 a game, for the uppers and like $35 for the lowers.... Everybody is happier...
2 pre season games 18 regular season games this makes the most sense to me...honestly, coaches make up their minds by the end of week 2 of preseason on players they want to keep if not have 17 games, with teams playing on a couple of neutral sites
Yeah, I'm sure the players aren't thrilled, they probably want more money too seeing how this is a ploy for the NFL to make money. Salary cap raised.
Yep, the players share is a 60%. The owners want it to go closer to 50%, so they'll play more games, but then the players will want more money, so I wonder how its going to balance out. Oh yeah, we has fans have to pay for more games at absurd prices too. Gotta love Sports Business, its almost as soulless as the Oil Industry. But at least happiness can be attained at a football game.
damn nfl direct ticket is gonna go up by about $50.oh well i'd pay that now and not bitch if i had too
Yeah we're pretty much on the same page bro. But I prefer games from the couch so it only affects 3 games a season.
Jim Brown doesn't have the title of rushing leader for 12-14 game seasons so when Emmitt's record is broken he's not going to be considered the rushing champ in any form. I think this is a silly idea. 16 games is enough, these guys already have their lives shortened playing 16 game seasons. Adding 2 more poundings to the body is not a good idea physically for these players. We will see shorter careers but the NFL is all about greed and b/c they rip us off for preseason and want to shorten preseaosn they don't want to lose that extra money so they'll expand the season and it will got to late february meaning fans in cold weather Cities will now have to go to games in February. Some day, somewhere a fan is going to die from the extreem cold temps.
