Dolphins at the 15 with a minute to go, running out of time isn't an issue for them. either they are going to score a tying field goal or take the lead with a TD. either way, the Jets were going to need time on the clock when they got the ball back, so what was Rex holding on to those timeouts for? and if we stopped them completely, we wouldn't need the timeouts afterwards, so again, the only logical use would be on defense. at the least, it would give the D a breather from getting run over. other than that, I have no gripe with Rex so far.
I said it before, very HERM EDWARDS LIKE. You let them Line up then call a timeout, We see their formation and make em change it and our D gets a rest. TWICE. If they score, Squib, we get the ball @ the 40 With a chance to get a Few 1st Downs and get within striking distance. There is absolutely no reason to hold onto them! Whether we score or not. Resting the D was the Priority there. When I rewatch it I'll give the exact times ans such but you gotta use em.
Yep, Rex said in the post game that he had confidence they would stop them. Regardless, use your damn time outs. If you DONT stop them, you give your offense some sort of a chance. Horrible clock management there. You took the words right out of my mouth with the reference to Hermy there....
Yeah we should have taken a TO. But the thing is, we had two timeouts and Dolphins had three plays before kicking a field goal. If we stop them twice, they run down the clock until the last second after the third try to kick the FG anyways. If we don't stop them, as was the case, we'd need to give up the TD on the first play. Thats not how a D or HC operates. Either way its a loss loss situation. That third down completion should have never happened.
Terrible logic. They have 3 plays whether they score or not. We want as much time as possible on the clock after those 3 plays regardless.
Sure, if we stopped them on the first 2 running plays, there goes the time outs but there is nothing to say they couldnt of scored on the very first play and we would of had 45 sec left with 1-2 time outs and a more realistic chance to win the game.
i thought about the timeouts during that drive..and personally would have called them..but it could go either way really. if you can stop them on that 3rd down, you give your offense some chance to come back and win it.
I paid close attention to this during the game. I didn't see a good opportunity to take a T.O. really. The Dolphins were taking T.Os under a minute or so, so that took away our need to call them in that situation. I could be wrong and will have to rewatch the game (if I can bare it) but I'm pretty sure there wasn't a opportune time to call a T.O. There was a lot of plays in that last drive where the clock was stopped from players going out of bounds or the Dolphins called TO.
unless he expected a turnover, which would make him delusionally optimistic, he thought we'd stop them and hold them to a field goal, so we would still want to have time on the clock afterwards. rookie mistake.
