It's great to see that they're already out there trying to get better and build chemistry, how motivated they are. This is the right way to hit it off, to start out fast. The more in sync they are come training camp the better...

I thought it went without saying. If his contract was more expensive he would probably have to worry about being jettisoned.

I actually hope geno will benefit from a new regime and system. I doubt it will happen, but the kid has an arm, and has shown flashes. If his brain would catch up, he wouldn't he half bad.

Can't criticize someone for trying to improve their craft. It almost feels like Jet fans want Geno to fail and not turn into a viable qb who can lead us to the promise land.

I am optimistic that Geno's best football is coming( year 3 is suppose to be the jump), especially with Gailey and his proven track record of turning bottom rung talent at the qb position into a feasible starters for your team. With the talent we now have before the draft ( Marshall, Decker, Kerley and Amaro) it could be the spark Geno needs to become a middle of the pack qb. All we need is someone to manage the game and not make costly turnovers.

IF his brain would catch up. And that little phrase will unfortunately continue to be the theme in this story.

Good post. Everyone would love Geno to become a quality/average/ok QB, I think it is just a natural defense mechanism to give up on Geno after what happened with both him and Sanchez. People are just tired of hoping that our QB will develop, only to be let down time and again.

While trying to stay optimistic about Smith, can't help but think of SanchezWest...

Why do a lot of people on here want Geno to fail? Just so there not wrong? Show me where a QB who was drafted in the 1st or 2nd round that was cut? Because of football reasons?

With another year under his belt, some more weapons around him, a WAY better defense to support him (and not constantly fall behind by 7+ points) and take pressure off of him, I think Geno will have a much easier time this year. If he does start. If not then obviously the same will apply to Fitzpatrick, who never had any of those things (let alone all of them) when he was with the Rams, Bills or Texans. The O-Line has also been adressed and solidified. Unless the O-Line completely breaks down there really isn't any excuse for both QB's to underperform this year.

Nothing goes without saying around here,
and yes if he was being paid more he would have been cut more than likely. But he is not being paid more because he was a 2nd round pick that was going to need time to develop, hence his presence on the roster and appropriate cap hit that goes with it.

the problem with Geno is he has shown he has the abilities to be a good QB and the deficiencies to be a bad QB. do you jettison him because of the latter or see if you can nurture the former? I think with a new regime in place it has to be the former.

Geno is talented and has ability, but what he doesn't have is consistency. We'll see what different coaching and offensive weapons can do for the young QB.

He knows that if he screws up this year he's pretty much done as an NFL QB (starter anyway).

I have low expectations for Geno but it will be interesting to see what he can do with a different head coach, Gailey and more weapons.

You can't expect consistency from your QB when you have no weapons around you and a defense that gives up 1-2 bigplay touchdowns per game at times.

The fact that he was around in the 2nd round always reminds me that an awful lot of other teams never saw him as a starter. You can throw around the Brady (and others) story, but I think his 2 year performance backs up a lot of other team's view of him in the first place.

    Agreed.

I have a feeling that with our new secondary, those 1-2 big play touchdowns will be going the other way. Can you remember the last time we forced a big fumble or had a pick 6?

Now that we have a legitimate #1 and a top #2 WR, not to mention our shifty slot receiver and budding TE, we will see if Geno's perfect passer rating was a fluke or a taste of what's to come.

I don't think there's any way they jettison him before the end of this season. He's still on his rookie contract and cheap, and has shown some flashes, no matter how rare they have been. Gailey is known for getting the best out of his QBs, and he designs his spread system to fit the talents and abilities of his QBs and players. I think they will give him every possible chance to develop this season, then cut bait with him following the season if we don't see marked improvement, especially in stopping all the TOs.
