Read on NJ.com (Dave Hutchinson) that the Jets are attemping to bring in Mike Elgin, recently released by the Patriots.Forgive my ignorace, but beyond the usual he knows the Pats routine, how is he, and could he be a back up and help our OL? Appreciate feedback
Saw on another forum that he was added to our practice squad yesterday. Seems to need a year in an NFL strength program but could bring future dividends... http://iowa.scout.com/a.z?s=8&p=8&c=1&nid=2686090
Mike is actually my nephew. I think he will actually stick around awhile. Mike Devlin (former Hawkeye) worked him out pretty well in Iowa City before the draft and my brother in law told me the Jets were looking to take a 7th round flier on him before the Pats took him. Mike is a solid 6'4 290 pound farm boy with an intense work ethic. He was a 3year starter at Iowa at C/RG. He was actually over 300 lbs before camp, but was told to come in lighter. His greatest asset is probably his brain. Hwas a 2 time 1st team academic all american and graduated with a 3.9 gpa in mechanical engineering. If this doesn't work out for him, he will definitely land on his feet. Not a guy you are going to hear about in the police report. Mike played a lot for the Pats this preseason at both Gs & C and probably would have been signed to their p squad if the Jets didn't grab him.
I'd like to see us try and develop this guy. From what limited action I saw him play in he could turn into a decent NFL calibre guard and move Brandon "pay me" Moore out of the way in a couple of years. Just needs some time in the weight room.
