Free agent DE Dwight Freeney is visiting the Patriots Friday. Freeney isn't just going to sit around and wait for the Broncos to finish their standoff with Elvis Dumervil. He'd be a nice fit as a situational pass rusher in New England, where Bill Belichick always seems to be getting the most out of inexpensive superstars past their prime. Former Falcons pass-rusher John Abraham, who is also visiting the Patriots Friday, fits the bill as well. New England ranked 15th in the league last year with 37 sacks.
Fair point. He's had many successes in this area and he's also had some notables that did not pan out. I like that he takes these chances. They usually don't cost the team too much money. He's fortunate to have the cache to be wrong and still be able to try again. Many GMs would don't have the clout to take those types of chances.
Oh don't get me wrong, it's a great strategy. You guys are only missing one or two pieces from winning a SB and that means you can afford to take flyers on players like these. It's just seems people expect for the player Bill signs to be amazing, when in fact you know it can go the other way from time to time
Seems like N.E. is bringing in and signing a lot of older players. More than I have noticed in the past. Do you think that they are loading up for one last run at the Superbowl before Brady packs it in?
Washington and Wilson? Nobody else has signed, and talks with Freeney/Abraham slowed down or stopped as soon as the Dumervil news came out. Coincidence or not reguarding Dumervil, they are signing mostly rather young players to this point. Jones is still a kid, Arrington, Amendola, and Talib could be considered in their prime and I think they would maybe like to bring back Vollmer and sign Sanders who are anything but old. I think2 years ago Haynesworth was given a chance to play in the role he became known for, the penetrating DE, in a place away from Washington, which he hated from day 1. Ochocinco was just ...too dumb? Carter and Waters too I guess, but they were both a huge success, and none of these 4 players have played for the team in over a year. In 2012 Lloyd was really the only older player brought in to play a big role. I see 2 or 3 veterans given minor roles each year, nothing that really shouts "win now"/desperation though.
I see it more as filling a hole for one year rather than spending future resources on big money FA's. The Jets seem to be taking that tack this year.
