Former NFL Linebacker Kevin Mitchell Dead of Apparent Heart Attack Monday April 30, 2007 4:58pm http://www.whtm.com/news/stories/0407/419064.html Former NFL linebacker Kevin Mitchell has died of an apparent heart attack. He was 36 years old. Mitchell was a standout at Harrisburg High School and went on to star at Syracuse University. During his collegiate career, he earned Honorable Mention All-America and First-Team All-Big East honors as a junior and senior. He finished his career ranked third in school history with 21 sacks. Mitchell was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in the second round of the 1994 NFL Draft. He spent four years with the 49ers, and earned a Super Bowl ring in his rookie season when the 49ers defeated the San Diego Chargers. In 1998, Mitchell joined the New Orleans Saints. In 2000, he was traded to the Washington Redskins (website - news) where he played until his retirement in 2004. In a statement released by the Washington Redskins, owner Daniel Snyder said; "Kevin and his family are in my thoughts and prayers Monday, and in the prayers of the entire Redskins organization. He was one of the first players I bonded with and was a great family man. Anyone who knew him was touched by his smile, joy for life and love of his family. Anyone who ever played with him or against him never forgot it. He earned our deepest respect."
RIP Mommas, don't let your babies grow up to be NFL players. The early mortality of these guys is just incredible, and that doesn't even include how so many of them can barely walk by the time they're 50.
