Per Sports Illustrated Former Bengals and Cowboys right tackle La'el Collins worked out for the New York Jets on Tuesday according to the NFL's official transaction wire. The Bengals released him last month and saved at least $6.2 million in cap space. Get it done Joe D. Probably why Hardman is being shopped.
Good stuff. I was hoping they would give him a workout. He's coming off an injury, but that could be an option moving forward. It may take a few weeks to get acclimated, however.
Seems like a no brainer but I haven’t really followed his career the past couple of years. Tempering expectations, it does worry me a bit that Cincy let him go and Burrow is still getting clobbered this year.
He tore his ACL in December. That's not a lot of recovery time for a big man that has to move quickly and laterally in small spaces
Collins was set to meet with the Giants afterwards. I hope Douglas made him a good offer to change his mind.
Looks like he was cleared a few weeks ago. Pickings are slim at this point, and he has some potential to be better than our scrubs, depending on fitness. We should have brought him as soon as he was cleared as some called on this board and maybe even placed him on IR so he can start working here, getting in shape and learning the system. Now we also have competition from the Giants in case he was actually good during the workout. Let's hope JD can get him if he is. Would be a shame to lose him in this scenario when we had no competition a few weeks back when the fans called for it, not to mention a few weeks head start on the playbook.
Fans always call for spending money. Remember the noise around Dalvin Cook? Now people want to cut him.
Let's hope it was the injury and the CAP they saved which they needed for the guy we wanted: Orlando Brown. You have a good point though, he wasn't all that great for them last year. Still, what are the alternatives? If he can get back to Dallas form, could be a steal. More likely a little below average tackle. Which may still be a solid upgrade over what we currently have.
We signed tackle Dennis Kelly. He hasn't played much the last two seasons but he's a body. https://clutchpoints.com/jets-news-new-york-veteran-dennis-kelly-alijah-vera-tucker-ir
The Jets fan in me is screaming to turn over every stone to find serviceable OL. Then the logical part of my brain remembers this guy skirted the NFL draft to make more money and go where he wanted, would he be the type to use the Jets for a quick money grab? Probably.
To be fair, I think there were rumors he failed a drug test and it wasn't true. So after he dropped out of the first round, he told everyone not to draft him.
It appears he played for 3 years for Keith Carter in Tennessee and Rodgers teammate in 2021. Didn't look terrible when he had to come in during that time, better in run block than pass. It may be just the fact he can pick up the playbook fast. I am afraid that's where the positives end. He did not do well last year for Indy nor this preseason for Philly. Didn't make PS for them. Slim pickings... Though isn't there an option out there to sign someone who actually made a PS for one of the teams and did decent in preseason? I suppose JD will look there if Max/Billy suck this Sunday as this requires a roster spot.
Nah, it was more like his ex-gf was murdered. He “wasn’t a suspect” but it was new enough where he dropped.
I wouldn't expect Collins, to be any better than any of the other old washed up OL we picked up recently.
Glad they at least brought him in. I think the fact that he still doesn't have a contract means the Jets aren't going to break the bank for him, which is the right call. For the right price, I'd be for it. He played at a high level once, granted that's been a few years ago now but it never hurts to have OTs who have done it before.
