Hey guys, the game wasn't aired up in CNY and wanted to know how the D looked lastnight. I know its only the first preseason game but this was something I was looking forward to seeing. Any thoughts would be awesome.
I tuned in and out....they didn't llok to good to me..Clevelands first string pretty much marched right down the field on their TD drive......and Gholston got beat like a hundred tmes last night too while he was in....but it's only the first game.....I won't pass judgment yet
Didn't look good to me, they didn't stop anyone when the starters were on the field. Cleveland only punted one or twice, we did get a couple picks from the backups. Lowery had one pick and ran a punt back for a TD, then got a bad PI penalty at the end.
I agree, although they were running pretty vanilla stuff and Harris, Ellis and I believe Coleman didn't start. They also gave Gholston a lot of playing time and he at times looked pretty lost. Thought Pace looked pretty good though. Still a work in progress...
I'm in the same camp. I realize Harris wasn't out there but that's no excuse. Our 1st team defense looked deplorable. You could see the way they were running the ball down our throats at will (1st team). If I were Mangini, I'd be all over this unit (and Sutton) like flies on shit. They didn't get it done last night. No excuses. Not gelling? Fine. That means we need more practices. In fact, kill two birds with one stone. Put Favre under center, who needs the repetitions with the 1st team OFF, and make the 1st team DEF work their asses off to stop him.
Agree with everyone above. First preseason game but it showed some things from the past. Three down lineman with little penetration and linebackers being picked up on almost every blitz which has become signature with this defensive scheme. Short passes that were made all game long that had guys wide...I mean wide open. Like it was said above...the Browns looked like they could do whatever they wanted whenever they wanted. Gholston did get beat several times but showed great lateral movement from one side to the other. He actually got better as the game went on...which could be from the quality of the players on the other side going down hill as it got later in the game. Bowens actually carried the defense from the middle of the 3rd quarter on. Between him and Lowery...they were the only guys making tackles for a good portion of the second half. Lowery looks like he is an interesting guy to follow over the next 3 preseason games. He seems to constantly be around the ball. First preseason game...agreed...but it looked awfully familiar which was a bit alarming to me at least.
I got thrashed in the game thread last night for sharing my opinion that the defense looked bad and our depth was real poor. Apparently I'm too stupid to realize it's the first preseason game. It's been the same the past 2 years and the past 2 years the defense sucked elephant cock until the bye week. Lets hope Mangini fixes it in the preseason this year.
It was only the first pre season game, But i didn't think they looked good at all..seemed confused and they were getting run on just like last year..Cleveland's second team moved all over our first team d...Manginis ideas of slamming a square peg into a round hole is getting old with me. i hope they improve
I was right there with you. Don't get me started on the double standards Jets fans love to use. Defense isnt ready to play- "it's vanilla, and just pre-season" Ratliff looks good- "He's playing against second team and it's just pre-season." :shit:
I didn't like the way the 1st team Defense played either, but I believe there are three more pre-season games left. Plenty of time to fix the problems.
If the defense blows until the bye week again this year I'll be furious. It's unacceptable to not be able to adjust without an extra week.
Like Favre said in the interview... its all about chemistry and the faster we gain that the better. From what I'm hearing how we lack that greatly.
Not sure why anyone would thrash you about that...its a fact. Im not sure who is making the final decisions with this style of defense but Mangini has a set of balls on him if he is allowing Sutton to have the same exact problems he had last year before Mangini stepped in. If, like you said below, this goes until the bye week, then shame on Mangini...he cant be that dumb. Im not waiting to make my final decision on them until the bye week...I will give them until the end of the Giant preseason game. I dont care how many new faces there are on defense...last night just looked like different players but same problems. "Harris wasnt there". Give me a break. Talk about a vanilla offense they threw at us.
Should've gotten rid of BOB sutton, and, its not Tannebaum's job in question this year..its certainly Mangini
In another note, Gholston looked less then stellar. He was beaten several times after he dropped in coverage. I only remember him making one good tackle, he also had some pressure on Quinn once, but fell for the pump fake and missed the sack, although he disrupted the play. Pace did not have too much of an impact either. For a guy who supposed to be a blazer, his speed wasn't that evident.
Let's give them the benefit of the doubt because, as Baamf ponts out, it wasn't just Harris out, it was (I believe) Ellis and Coleman also. And Gholston is just plain overwhelmed at the moment. I think we all expect perhaps too much too early... first preseason game and all. But I expect Mangini to be taking names and kicking ass this week. I'm anxious to see how much Sutton can bring this unit together for the 2nd game.
I am disapointed, especially after them apparently being quite a good looking unit in TC. However, it is still only game 1 of the preseason and I'm not going to get too worked up about it.
