Missed practice again. Left the last game early after returning from a strained groin in the first game. Anyone, absolutely anyone, who says the trade we made to get rid of this guy was wrong, is as ignorant as it gets. I say this because I've read on multiple threads that our pass rush is horrendous and that our pass rush has dissappeared to Atlanta, yada yada yada... Well, it seems the pass rush has dissappeared in Atlanta as well. THey shouldn't miss it much. AFterall, it was only there for 3 quarters out of 6games this season... Good riddance with that a$$ - clown..
Great talent but he just couldn't stay healthy and it wasn't wise for us to give him a long term deal. If remotely healthy he's worth a big contract but we made the right move and b/c of it we have a C who should start for the next decade+ AND valubale cap space.
I still miss Abraham, but obviously the CS made the right decision. Though he won't get any credit, Mangold could be rookie of the year, he's looked great. IMO, Abraham rushed back from the groin injury.
Its true we do miss his rushing god given ablility to get to the QB, But when we needed him the most he was never there to help. This must be addressed in next years draft, We cannot let Ellis try to rush the QB all by himself with no help on the other side. But I sure Mangini is making his notes and he knows what this team will need. Throw in a NT and a Side order of RB's and I think Im full.
I've said before, I wanted to keep him and it's now apparent that would've been a mistake. With apologies to Branch Rickey, we sucked with him healthy for 16 games last year, we can suck without him.
John Abramam's legacy with the Jets - Sitting his ass on the bench to protect his contract while his team battled the Steelers for a shot at the AFC Championship Game.
We miss his pass rush without a doubt. But as already mentioned, we don't miss him sitting out in critical moments of the season. I'm happy to have Mangold here in his stead
"John Abramam's legacy with the Jets - Sitting his ass on the bench to protect his contract while his team battled the Steelers for a shot at the AFC Championship Game." It's been well documented that Abraham was legitimately injured at that time but the Jets PR department wasn't disclosing the true nature of his injury. Had Abraham played, he would have done a disservice to the team because he would have been robbed of the speed that makes him effective. Please read prior posts by me and others(including some people who had the same injury or are familar with the medical field) on this subject before you bash Abraham for that.
I'm just glad Mangold is here anchoring the center of the line for the next 10 plus years. Abraham is a game changer as we all know, but just could not stay healthy and it obviously is still going on in Atlanta.
It must be some injury that was so SEVER that he chose to sit out the game, but still chose to practice all week leading up to it. Abraham himself said his contract was a concern that lead to his decision!
Well, he seems to be always legitmately injured and he is also legitmatlely making a bazillion dollars. 3 quarters in six games ..How much is that a quarter? The issue may be his pain threshold, which is probably low..not a good characteristic for an NFL player..Look at Coles, he's dinged every week, but goes out there every week, thats why Mangini loves the guy..mental toughness, which JA does not possess I believe!!
This is the key. The reality is, as good as he can be, he's not there enough to be counted on. This is his 7th year in the league, it's more than a trend at this point in time. He's the anti-Joe Klecko.
Right On John Abramam's legacy with the Jets - Sitting his ass on the bench to protect his contract while his team battled the Steelers for a shot at the AFC Championship Game." You couldn't be more accurate. SALZ have you lost your mind? Abraham admitted the same. Great talent heartless, souless, Salz= no crediblity
Even if your information is correct about the extent of Abraham's injury in '04(which I still doubt), then the issue with Abraham becomes this: why be such a jackass at contract negotiations asking for money that should only be paid to a player who shows up for 16 games a season? If he can't play because of injury, I grant that it doesn't make a lot of sense to go out there and give half an effort. I understand that. But then lower your expectations about what your true value is on the market! And don't get pissed at the Jets when they legitimately question whether he's worth top dollar with the injury record he had/has. JAbe is like that sports car that breaks down all the time: it's nice to pass your friends when the car is humming down the highway, but it sure sucks when they pass you in their Chevy as you sit in the breakdown lane.
Him practicing the week before the injury was exaggerated too. He tried to practice but couldn't because the injury was hurting to much. You guys just aren't aware that the real facts came out about this case (Read Dan Leberfeld) after it happened. You guys only know what the piece of shit media told you at the time. His comments about not playing because he was worried about his contract was taken out of context. He was seriously hurt. He wasn't being a 'jackass' at contract negotiations either. He was trying to get the most money that he can, and he ended up getting that deal from the Falcons. So what was wrong with that? Should a player not try to get the best deal possible for himself? Why should he have been loyal to an organization that 1) Screwed up reporting his injury in 2004 so that he looked like the villian and 2) Renegged on a promise to give him a long term deal if he stayed healthy for the 2005 season? (Which he did). I agree Abe is injury prone and that he doesn't deserve a big long term contract, but I am tired of people villifying the guy.
Abraham's "promise" was based in a reality where Herman Edwards was the head coach and Terry Bradway the general manager. Once the scheme switched he was valueless. Simple as that. Several times over the course of his career here, the previous regime tried and failed to make him into a linebacker in the Derrick Thomas/LT mode. I agree that Abraham was seriously hurt, but he made moronic comments that left him open to criticism, particularly because he had an injury history that included sitting out a playoff game with the flu. Moreover, he was prone to nagging injuries, and his conduct was unbecoming of a highly paid player(DWI). Moreover, he was not half the player that most people here make him out to be. He never really developed or progressed as a pass rusher, and he would have commanded upwards of 20 million in guarantees(Jevon Kearse's contract). Bringing him back made absolutely no sense. -X-
I think the Abe sitiuation in the playoff game vs. the Steelers is the Jets/The Gang Green "Grassy Knoll". No one will every really know what happened, but it will be debated at least once a month for a very long time.
