Being new to the pool I'm sure to have a few stupid questions. Are the picks against the spread or straight up?

Being new and all, I don't really want to come right out of gate talking smack, but it's kind of hard not to do when it comes to pools, fantasy, etc. So, with that being said, here it goes. I didn't take Carolina. Tennessee was my big pick. I don't know how many people here took them, but I know that on Yahoo! the vast majority of people took Jacksonville. I did think it was cuckoo that many people took San Diego in survival pools. I saw that pick made on message boards and in newspapers the past few days. I didn't get it. Carolina is a good team. Plus, wouldn't people rather use San Diego when they play the shitty Chiefs or Raiders? I mean, c'mon now.
