If that is the case, if he did have a number what would it be. I am purchasing a personalized jersey for my buddy and I need a number to put on it.
He could have worn either 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 NOT #12 13 14 15 16 17 18 or 19. Those are numbers any QB can wear.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say it can't be 10 or 14 either. 10 was worn by Pat Ryan and 14 was Richard Todd, both QB's in 1980 when the film was released. If you want to get technical, they wouldnt have had the rights to put those numbers on the jersey either.
But when Flash Gordon actually came out were 12 and 13 already retired? It was a loooooong time ago...
Namath (12) was retired in 1985 and I believe Maynard was in '87 (13), the movie came out in 1980, so at the time, both numbers was still available
So that being the case, and considering Flash was written in the 70's, I could almost guarentee that Flash would have worn 12 because of Namath.
Like I said, as long as he wasn't wearing 10 or 14, he'd be ok. It was written in the 70's, but it was out in 1980, so the only Jerseys it could not be is 10 or 14
Scratch 17 as well... if it was written in the late 70's then Matt Robinson was our QB and he wore 17... ok, so for legal purposes, Flash could not have worn 10, 14 or 17.... 12 or 13 if you want to show respect today
