Fullback waived to make room for Robinson By BOB McGINN / bmcginn@journalsentinel.com Posted: Sept. 12, 2006 Green Bay - Vonta Leach, the Green Bay Packers' best blocker in the backfield, was released Tuesday as the club cleared roster space to sign wide receiver Koren Robinson.Leach learned of the news in a telephone call Tuesday afternoon from Reggie McKenzie, the team's director of pro personnel. "I've been in this thing long enough and it doesn't even faze you after a certain point," said his agent, Ralph Vitolo. "He loved it up there in Green Bay. Just part of the business." Leach, 24, started at fullback Sunday against Chicago because William Henderson was withheld. Henderson underwent arthroscopic knee surgery Aug. 21 but returned to limited practice last week and should be ready Sunday. In the Bears game, Leach played 18 snaps and blocked well."He did all he could do," Vitolo said. "He played a hell of a game against Chicago. We have to move on now." General manager Ted Thompson was unavailable for comment. Coach Mike McCarthy didn't return a phone call seeking comment. The Packers were able to go with one fullback because they have four tight ends on the roster. One of them, David Martin, played six snaps at fullback Sunday. Vitolo said he expected Leach to be awarded on waivers to a team this afternoon. He mentioned New Orleans, the New York Jets and Houston as possibilities. The Saints, who play the Packers on Sunday at Lambeau Field, don't have a healthy fullback after losing two in Cleveland. Mike Karney (calf) is out two to four weeks and Keith Joseph (knee) is out four to six weeks.A Saints spokesman said the team made no roster moves Tuesday. Former 49er Fred Beasley also might be a possibility. If the Saints claim Leach, he could be playing against his former teammates in four days. Last year, Leach played 269 snaps compared with Henderson's 307. He came off the Packers' practice squad in 2004 to play 14 snaps in the final three games.Leach hurt himself by dropping two passes in the second exhibition game against Atlanta. He didn't drop any more passes and improved his blocking in the final two games.
