Brett Favre sees Jets coming together in a Super way BY OHM YOUNGMISUK DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER Tuesday, September 30th 2008, 8:55 PM Sabo/News Brett Favre is connecting with Jerricho Cotchery and rest of Jets. Brett Favre knows how far chemistry can take a team. His Packers came together quickly and far exceeded expectations last year in their run to the NFC Championship Game. And then in that setting, Favre saw the Giants march on to the Super Bowl as if it were their destiny. Now Favre says another New York team is showing glimpses of being the type of group that suddenly clicks. Favre likes what he is seeing from the Jets and the future Hall of Famer thinks there is potential for something Super. "When I say that this team has a lot of potential, I really believe it," Favre said. "The question is, can the chemistry come together pretty quickly. I think you're seeing flashes of it. It took a couple of years for that to happen in Green Bay. Last year we kind of exploded. But we'd been playing together for a couple years. There were a few new faces." "It's like the Giants last year, something clicked," Favre continued. "What that was, I don't know. I don't want to say we can be the Giants, we have a long ways to go but we have the makeup that can be pretty good." After their Super Bowl run, the Giants have become the blueprint for every team. Every coach and player knows that no matter how bad a team looks, it can come together in an instant. The Giants started 0-2 last season and were on the verge of going 0-3 before making a defining goal-line stand against Washington. And even after that, the Giants seldom looked like champions. The Jets, who carry a 2-2 record into the bye week, are far from Super Bowl material. But Favre and the Jets have made strides to the point where they dropped 56points on the Cardinals on Sunday. The quarterback also says that his days of analyzing the Jets' complex offense are over and that he is using the bye week to fine-tune and identify successful plays as opposed to learning plays and terminology. "It is a dramatic jump," tight end Chris Baker said chuckling over how far Favre has come from his first few days of training camp. "Just to call the play out was tough for him early on. A couple of times we just got the play, we didn't get a formation or protection or things like that back in camp. He has really evolved." The revamped offensive line has been sharp, giving Favre extended time to find receivers. And those receivers are clearly meshing with Favre as evidenced by their six touchdowns against Arizona. The defense has shown flashes with superb play from cornerback Darrelle Revis, defensive tackle Kris Jenkins and a reinvigorated Bryan Thomas, who has four sacks already after finishing with 2-1/2 last year. And with Cincinnati, Oakland, Kansas City and St. Louis looming in four of the next five games, Favre and the Jets could be thinking Giant things are on the horizon. Already, Favre sounds a lot like Michael Strahan, who insisted last year how much he enjoyed being around his teammates after nearly retiring during training camp. "I'm at a stage in my career where practice and meetings can be tedious," Favre said. "But a change of pace, enjoying the guys you work with, which I enjoyed the guys I worked with in the past, but it's been different in a good way." "I enjoy being here," Favre added. "I don't know where we go from here. I hope we continue to go up. But it's been fun."
It's been fun so far. But Super? .... I've been let down too many times before. I'm just going to enjoy this one game at a time!!
I've been thinking super since the day we signed him and I have caused much laughing by friends around the league. But, just if....,
Super Bowl or no Super Bowl, I'm glad we have Favre aboard anyway. Even in successful seasons, since 1998 we have had such incredibly BORING offenses, that it was a wonder that any of us actually enjoyed watching this team. Now, win or lose, TD or INT, this offense is EXCITING and fun to watch. I want a SB as much as the next fan, but I'm going to enjoy watching this team this season, even if we don't win another game... It's about time!
Man I think I'd lose my mind if we don't win another game. But in one way I agree. Even if we lose out, chances are it'll be in shootouts that would at least be fun to watch. Still hard to believe the Jets scored 56 points, although I think the D deserves a lot more credit for that then they're getting. Regardless, watching the Jets air it out on Sunday was really refreshing, and it shows that there's a ton of potential for this team with a real QB leading the way.
SB is a long shot, but, last Sunday, could just feel that that team became Brett Favre's team. Everyone plays harder because of that. :jets:
I'm only happy when we win. Thankfully, with Favre, we stand to do that far more often than not this year.
Good post Parts of me think we could make the playoffs and beyond but there is a HUGE part of me that says "Sam, You are a Jets fan...lets fantasize about beating the Bengals and take it from there"
Never win another game? No way, not going to happen, we will win games and do a lot better than 4-12. I'm thinking a good shot at 11-5 maybe 10-6 if we don't get the breaks.
I can't believe it. One game (where the defence gives up a ton of points) and some sportsbeat hack just HAS to invoke the Superbowl. Favre actually saw this coming, he's no fool he's been around the block, and he actually went out of his way in the postgame to squash in advance something like this, saying "don't go out and buy superbolw tickets or anything." But notice how this hack quotes everything he said EXCEPT that. There is always some unimaginative moron hack who will write anything in order to sell newsprint to other morons ...
The Optimist = Hells yeah. I feel the same way. Super Bowl baby! The Pessimist = Of cousrse he says that. He's going to retire after 1 year here so WTF do you expect him to say? That this team is cursed and he can't wait to gtf outta here? The Realist = The 1st 2 games he didn't know the offense & players. LC was still not 100%. Now in these last 2 games he's showing that he's learning and LC is healthy. Along with the CS opening it up a little more, Anything is possible but it's way too early for this. Our defensive has new players also and a lot can change. Let's just sit back and enjoy the ride .
im the biggest optimist on the planet and even I think there is no god damn way we are getting to a superbowl too many holes in our game
That's just it...... I was at the San Diego game with my 1 year old who of course will never remember but when he asks me about his 1st game I can tell him that he was sitting in my arms when Brett Favre hit LC in the back of the endzone. We got to our seats late so that's the 1st TD we saw. We probably aren't going to win the SB but I think there were so many people in the national media that said this wasn't going to work that Favre just wants to prove everybody wrong and it's making him work just a bit harder than he would have if he'd gone to the Vikes or Bucs. It's just amazing to watch him hit guys in stride and throw lasers to the back of the endzone.
That first TD he threw to Coles against Arizona got there so fast I couldn't believe it. I jumped up and yelled 'Chad Pennington could NEVER do that!!!'
Absolutely. Even though the SB win Favre has was a great moment, I reflect back on a lot of great plays and great games throughout that season. In fact, I still look back on the development of that team from 1992-96 as they built toward a championship. You could always see signs in the stands at Lambeau Field during the 1996 season......."Its the Journey".
The pass he threw to Coles when Green fell down I just kept thinking if Chad was our QB that ball A) would have floated out of bounds B) been so underthrown Coles would have had to come back and been tackled or C) been a 5 yard out to Baker.
